Introduction (back to top)

  • In a 2008 World History survey course enrolling 475 students, I created an online chat room in the Course Management System Sakai. Students could use it on their own.
  • I offered a midterm review session, in which students could ask questions about a study guide of "IDs" (terms to identify and define the significance of) and 4 essay questions (study guide).
    • That was my essentially my first real experience in a chat room (as opposed to instant messaging with one or a few people).
  • I Then did an on-line office hour about the paper topics the students had selected from a number of campus events over the course of the term. (paper events page and sample papers)
  • Finally, I held a couple of chat room review sessions for the final exam. By that time I was much more familiar with how to chat (don't compose a long answer and then post, but hit enter after each sentence), and they worked out much better. (final study guide)
    • The server crashed at one point, so we had to make contingency plans. (Like using an AIM chat room and email/website.)

Some lessons I learned

    • Practice a bit first, to get familiar with the diction of chat rooms (don't compose too long, but give short answers--hit enter often)
    • Give a reference who you're talking to
    • Perhaps reserve certain topics for certain times, or conduct different chats (forums might be a better tool?) at the same time
    • This is a good way to get students to talk who wouldn't otherwise
    • Feedback on what students understand (and not) is very valuable
    • Students talk to each other--some are role models
    • Students may get informal with you, say things they probably shouldn't--take it with a sense of humor and use it to your advantage
    • There are many "lurkers" who just listen in--probably valuable for them, too, and some are moved to ask. Others read the discussion later.

Student Use of Chat Room Prior to April 30, 2008 Review Session (back to top)

  • 1. Kylie L. (Apr 20, 2008 8:36 PM PDT) Hey
  • 2. Jonathan B.(Apr 20, 2008 9:38 PM PDT) just testing
  • 3. Jonathan B. (Apr 20, 2008 9:38 PM PDT) hey
  • 4. Jonathan B. (Apr 20, 2008 9:40 PM PDT) Is anyone else finding difficulty concising their essays down to the requirements? This essay looked easy at first, but requires a lot more research than I thought.
  • 5. Jessica F. (Apr 21, 2008 3:13 PM PDT) i didnt have much trouble writing it.
  • 6. Shai'la S. (Apr 21, 2008 8:44 PM PDT) If you're TA is colleen, she said that it is alright to go over the 1,000 words... you just can't be below 800
  • 7. Matthew S. (Apr 21, 2008 8:44 PM PDT) As long as your read the book it's not that difficult finding arguments, I did however have to edit it tons to meet the 1000 word limit.
  • 8. Peter C. (Apr 21, 2008 8:51 PM PDT) Hey guys...I was just wondering what arguments you guys were using. I'm obviously using God and Christianity and am done with that but I was wondering if there was any other arguments he uses
  • 9. Peter C. (Apr 21, 2008 8:52 PM PDT) i found economic arguments to end slavery but i dont know if that would go well with the prompt because its not speaking about provong africans are equal to europeans
  • 10. Peter C. (Apr 21, 2008 10:09 PM PDT) can anybody answer this?
  • 11. Matthew B. (Apr 21, 2008 11:19 PM PDT) i think the economic arguments are actually important because he talks about how even if he could convince everyone that they are equal that that still wouldn't be enough to get them to end the slave trade
  • 12. Matthew B. (Apr 21, 2008 11:19 PM PDT) because it was just too profitable, but by proposing other ways the economy would remain strong he justifies ending it
  • 13. Matthew S. (Apr 21, 2008 11:40 PM PDT) What were his other propositions for the economy continuing to be strong?
  • 14. Bailey F. (Apr 22, 2008 12:48 AM PDT) is it ok to only use 2 arguments?
  • 15. Michael Cannon (Apr 22, 2008 3:14 AM PDT) Should I put the page numbers at the top or bottom or does it not matter
  • 16. Paco W. (Apr 22, 2008 3:44 AM PDT) top i guess
  • 17. Michael Cannon (Apr 22, 2008 4:08 AM PDT) I use openoffice, Can I turn in my paper in .odt format? If I convert it to .doc a lot of the formatting is jumbled.
  • 18. Peter C. (Apr 22, 2008 11:50 AM PDT) Thanks Matthew
  • 19. Jessica F. (Apr 22, 2008 12:41 PM PDT) bored in class....
  • 20. Jessica F. (Apr 22, 2008 12:42 PM PDT) but thats just cus of the voting announcements.
  • 21. Jessica F. (Apr 22, 2008 12:42 PM PDT) i already voted.
  • 22. Jessica F. (Apr 22, 2008 12:42 PM PDT) i almost ran into someone trying to get me to vote yesterday... they need to get out of the pardall bike path/road :)
  • 23. James W. (Apr 23, 2008 2:11 PM PDT) how the hell do u resubmit a newer version paper?
  • 24. Edward L. (Apr 23, 2008 2:11 PM PDT) whoa I forgot to submit my essay and now 10% off my grade, don't you think it is unfair... people have work and midterms and other essays, just a simple mistake why.. why
  • 25. James W. (Apr 23, 2008 2:12 PM PDT) are they even lookin at the electric uploaded one? or jus the hardcopy?
  • 26. Edward L. (Apr 23, 2008 2:17 PM PDT) both
  • 27. Edward L. (Apr 23, 2008 2:17 PM PDT) the electric one is to see if we just copied the essay from an online source or something so I really do not see why we get 5% off everyday if it is late.
  • 28. Edward L. (Apr 23, 2008 2:18 PM PDT) Well that is what the syllabus says and what the email the professor send implied
  • 29. Edward L. (Apr 23, 2008 2:20 PM PDT) I think you might have to talk to your TA to see if you can resend it
  • 30. Sandy M. (Apr 25, 2008 11:29 AM PDT) what happens if you submitted your paper online, but not a hard copy?
  • 31. Aaron G. (Apr 29, 2008 11:15 PM PDT) So are the IDs posted on here ?
  • 32. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 6:53 PM PDT) If anyone want's to study at the library, im here

April 30, 2008, 8-9pm was announced time of session (back to top)

128 posts in 1 hour: prof made 40 contrbutions, 25 students posted (up to 100 were online)
Ryan D. (Apr 30, 2008 7:48 PM PDT) anyone have a filled out ID sheet willing to copy and sell?
Ryan D. (Apr 30, 2008 7:49 PM PDT) and prewritten essay?
Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 7:52 PM PDT) some of these i.d's are ridiculous
Gabriela G. (Apr 30, 2008 7:55 PM PDT) uh..most of the ids are ridiculous!
Bailey F. (Apr 30, 2008 7:55 PM PDT) anybody down to study at FT tonight?
Gabriela G. (Apr 30, 2008 7:55 PM PDT) yes!
Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 7:55 PM PDT) Come to the lib
1 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 7:57 PM PDT) If anyone has questions for me ...
Colin K. (Apr 30, 2008 7:59 PM PDT) are the IDs labeled "the triangular trade" and "the south atlantic slave trade" similar?
2 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:00 PM PDT) Anil showed that the south atlantic had unique features
Otoniel G. (Apr 30, 2008 8:02 PM PDT) yes the south atlantic was based in brazil, right?
Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 8:02 PM PDT) caribbean islands as well?
Rebecca EF. (Apr 30, 2008 8:02 PM PDT) How specific do we need to be on the culture ID?
3 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:03 PM PDT) Yes, Anil showed it wasn't a "triangle," but a "shuttle" directly back and forth
Stephanie D. (Apr 30, 2008 8:03 PM PDT) For Essay question two are we supposed to use Europe and one of its peripheries?
Alison W. (Apr 30, 2008 8:04 PM PDT) What is the significance of the creoles?
4 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:04 PM PDT) yes, not a "triangle" but a "shuttle"
Angelica G. (Apr 30, 2008 8:05 PM PDT) for question 4 do we just pick a movement and talk about it in realtion to the concepts you mentioned before the question
Brandt H. (Apr 30, 2008 8:06 PM PDT) Prof - Did the anti-slavery movement occur in Britain because those abolitionists believed in the immorality of it? or because of other reasons?
Brian B. (Apr 30, 2008 8:07 PM PDT) Porf-yea can you run through the shifting paradigm with that
5 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:07 PM PDT) Yes, it's actually pretty simple (I think): any one of those movements in chap. 16. The hardest part is describing what the "dominant paradigm" was, that the movement was reacting to
Jonathan F. (Apr 30, 2008 8:07 PM PDT) when you ask about paradigms, are you asking for the type of economic or social system that was present at that time?
Otoniel G. (Apr 30, 2008 8:08 PM PDT) we can use mercantilism and marxism for number four
Gabriela G. (Apr 30, 2008 8:09 PM PDT) brandt- i have that some europeans and americans were in favor of free trade. they wanted trade and production to be governed by the law of supply and demand
Brandt H. (Apr 30, 2008 8:10 PM PDT) thank you!
Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 8:10 PM PDT) Again: if anyone wants to study at the library let me know
6 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:10 PM PDT) anti-slavery movement in Britain: I'd ask why those activists were in Britain. I don't think it was coincidence. There weren't any in the US south, for instance.
Alison W. (Apr 30, 2008 8:11 PM PDT) so does anyone know the significance of the creoles by chance?
Brian B. (Apr 30, 2008 8:11 PM PDT) upper class in south america that ruled on a local level
7 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:11 PM PDT) paradigms: depending on the context, they may indeed be the econ or social system. For these questions, that's what they mean. But just about anything can be a paradigm.
Brandt H. (Apr 30, 2008 8:11 PM PDT) Well there is next to nothing on anti-slavery in the book so...
Otoniel G. (Apr 30, 2008 8:12 PM PDT) because they were full blooded europeans, they thought themselves to equall to the Peninsulares, but were treated differently
Brian B. (Apr 30, 2008 8:12 PM PDT) Prof- is the shifting pradigm with anti slavery the idea that it wasn;t really the rich white men that ended but the slave resistantce or is the paradigm shift the move from slavery is okay to its not okay?
Otoniel G. (Apr 30, 2008 8:13 PM PDT) so because of that fact, being creoles,it sorta moved them to rid themselves of the control of the peninsulares
8 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:13 PM PDT) creoles: Bolivar was a typical representative of creoles
Alison W. (Apr 30, 2008 8:13 PM PDT) thanks man!
Otoniel G. (Apr 30, 2008 8:14 PM PDT) yes
Otoniel G. (Apr 30, 2008 8:14 PM PDT) i was getting to that
Otoniel G. (Apr 30, 2008 8:14 PM PDT) he was a leading revolutianist
Stephanie H. (Apr 30, 2008 8:14 PM PDT) Professor-Can you explain to me the significance of World Regions?
Asia H. (Apr 30, 2008 8:15 PM PDT) yeah, does that have to do with the different ways of looking at history?
Ryan D. (Apr 30, 2008 8:15 PM PDT) prof- can you tell me which IDs are going to be on the midterm?
Asia H. (Apr 30, 2008 8:15 PM PDT) hahaha, nice.
9 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:16 PM PDT) world regions: we can do them by geography, by culture, by politics, or by things like the world values survey. Does it make a difference which one we choose?
10 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:17 PM PDT) IDs: nice try. I won't decide til after the chat.
Angelica G. (Apr 30, 2008 8:17 PM PDT) aw man
Hart T. (Apr 30, 2008 8:17 PM PDT) Prof - the critical perspective may look at Cook's journey to Australia as negative because it brought disease and forced the people westward... are there any other negative impacts from Cook's journey? Also, does the critical perspective ONLY focus on negative aspects?
Diego O. (Apr 30, 2008 8:17 PM PDT) professor marcuse..... for the 1st essay .. do you want us to choose an event like (french rev, enlightenment, or the abolition of slaves) and show how it affected other regions
Ryan D. (Apr 30, 2008 8:18 PM PDT) Prof- okay well let us know after the chat on the website! thanks
11 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:18 PM PDT) Critical persp: no, not just negatives, but *alternatives*, including paths not taken (new paradigms that never got established)
Stephanie H. (Apr 30, 2008 8:19 PM PDT) How long should the essay be?
Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 8:20 PM PDT) For cook's journey think of enlightenment; he started a new way of study- experience and experiment
Otoniel G. (Apr 30, 2008 8:20 PM PDT) why is the south atlantic slave trade important?
Rebecca EF. (Apr 30, 2008 8:21 PM PDT) I also thought that for Cooks journey that it was a very "western" way of doing things-he didn't really consider the cultures and he also showed Europe a new race so it added to the classification of race
12 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:21 PM PDT) 1st essay: yes, that is it--choose an event, show how focusing on Europe leads us to miss important things, about other regions, but maybe about Europe too
13 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:22 PM PDT) essay length: depending on handwriting, of course--two pages would be on the short side, 3 prob. ok, 4 I'd think sufficient for a good essay
Kyrsten L. (Apr 30, 2008 8:23 PM PDT) What will you be looking for in our essays?
14 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:24 PM PDT) south atlantic: what happened or didn't happen (or happened later) because Portugal's trade was an outlier different from the rest of Europe
Hart T. (Apr 30, 2008 8:24 PM PDT) how important is it to know the dates? i mean if we get a few dates incorrect (or omit them), how harsh will that be on our score?
Andrew N. (Apr 30, 2008 8:24 PM PDT) Prof. Marcuse-- on the 1st essay it says"(Hint: What developments/movements originated in northern Europe in the late 1700s? I can think of three big ones; one (or two) could suffice for a good answer." Does that mean you want us to talk about more than 1 event for a higher grade?
15 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:25 PM PDT) What I'm looking for? I don't care so much that you know a lot of facts, but that you show you understand the concepts well enough to apply them to some facts/situations, and gain insights by doing that
Kyrsten L. (Apr 30, 2008 8:26 PM PDT) thank you
16 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:26 PM PDT) knowing dates: listen to what your TA said. I spot check exams for consistency across sections, but TAs grade according to standards that they tell you in section
Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 8:27 PM PDT) Will the essays be verbatim to the study guide?
Jonathan F. (Apr 30, 2008 8:27 PM PDT) in the third question, what do you mean by "'anomalous' perturbations that the paradigm could not accommodate"? Does this involve who or what began to cause a change to that paradigm?
Luis C. (Apr 30, 2008 8:27 PM PDT) I think that race is a broad topic. What are you looking for us to talk about in the ID question?
17 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:28 PM PDT) dates cont'd: but for me, the year itself generally is not important. The part of a century, or relative to important events. Example: Battle of pamphlets--last 1/4 18th century AND time of French Rev. OR: Bolivar: early 19th c., time of Napoleon
Otoniel G. (Apr 30, 2008 8:28 PM PDT) anomalous pertubations as my t.a. said is more like cause and effect
18 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:28 PM PDT) essays will be essentially verbatim. If I get a question and feel changing a word or two will clarify, I'll do that.
19 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:29 PM PDT) a perturbation only becomes a cause if it has an effect
20 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:30 PM PDT) third q: perturbations--yes, what were the things that brought a paradigm into "crisis"
Alison W. (Apr 30, 2008 8:30 PM PDT) is there a curve or is that entirely out of the question? haha.
21 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:32 PM PDT) curve: if everyone flops there will be a curve for the FINAL grade, but we'll see if the papers and final don't improve if the midterm is bad. Class avg. should be around 85 for final grades.
Hong N. (Apr 30, 2008 8:32 PM PDT) for the first essay: should we explain the events that lead to a movement..ie antislavery?
Luis C. (Apr 30, 2008 8:33 PM PDT) I think that race is a broad topic. What are you looking for us to talk about in the ID question?
Jonathan F. (Apr 30, 2008 8:33 PM PDT) i would add culture to that as well
22 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:34 PM PDT) first essay: start with some of those big developments after 1750--what do you think they are? Then go back and think about what caused them.
23 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:35 PM PDT) race: yes, it's a broad concept. What role did it play in slavery? Was it an issue for Equiano?
Hong N. (Apr 30, 2008 8:36 PM PDT) i understand reasons why slavery was established, but i dont know the exact reasons for the ideas of abolition of slavery to come about
24 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:36 PM PDT) culture: yes, very broad. Why does it matter? Can we safely ignore it when we import democracy somewhere?
[24a] Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:37 PM PDT) abolition: indeed, scholars argue a lot about WHY it happened. So there is no one right answer, tho some answers are better than others
Hong N. (Apr 30, 2008 8:37 PM PDT) did abolition come about because of the success of slavery abolition in France and Haiti?
Natalie D. (Apr 30, 2008 8:39 PM PDT) what exactly are you looking for with the General Education ID, it's fundamentally a "western" enlightenment concept?
25 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:39 PM PDT) Haiti may have shown that former slaves could run their own society successfully, but the fear it provoked in planters delayed abolition in some places
Otoniel G. (Apr 30, 2008 8:39 PM PDT) like the united stated
26 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:40 PM PDT) GE significance: if there is any demographic that believes in the Enlightenment's "power of knowledge & reason," it is professors! You nailed that one--can you flesh it out a bit?
Otoniel G. (Apr 30, 2008 8:41 PM PDT) how they didn't consider haiti as a free nation
Natalie D. (Apr 30, 2008 8:41 PM PDT) thats the thing im not sure where to go with it, i've reviewed my slides and notes and im kinda confused
27 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:42 PM PDT) France abolished slavery to get former slaves to help fight England. But then F decided it wasn't such a good idea
28 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:43 PM PDT) Natalie, you mean GE?
Natalie D. (Apr 30, 2008 8:43 PM PDT) yes, general education
Brandt H. (Apr 30, 2008 8:43 PM PDT) For number 3, can we talk about the American and French revolution, or just 1 of them? Maybe how the American influenced the French?
29 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:45 PM PDT) GE: well, Hist 2 and Hist 4 only exist because of it, and many students (most) in this class are required to take it because "someone" decided it's a must-know. Why?
Natalie D. (Apr 30, 2008 8:46 PM PDT) to educate ourselves on not only american history but world history and its significance
Andrew Nassery (Apr 30, 2008 8:46 PM PDT) Is essay 3 referring to the bourgousie?
Hong N. (Apr 30, 2008 8:46 PM PDT) bc it provides us with a better understanding of the world? or how did history become apart of GE?
Natalie D. (Apr 30, 2008 8:46 PM PDT) am i on the right track?
30 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:47 PM PDT) essay 3: I'm not thinking so much of those revolutions, but another development or two that generated surplus that didn't just get consumed by the tiny elite
Hart T. (Apr 30, 2008 8:48 PM PDT) perhaps it opens up new paradigms through which we can view our world.
31 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:49 PM PDT) GE: Western Civ courses show the triumph of democracy from the ancient Greek to the US constitution, and the superiority of capitalism to other ways of economic organization
32 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:50 PM PDT) If we believe we're the best, is that a good thing? Now Western Civ profs like to say they teach it, "warts and all." But do we need to learn about alternatives?
33 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:50 PM PDT) essay 3: yes, the emergence of the "bourgeoisie" certainly perturbed the old paradigm
Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 8:50 PM PDT) i was thinking that the GE's are reminicsent of western enlightenment bc it focuses on unobjectionable and universal knowlege. well, also thinking about western civ paradigms, maybe the GE's are considered to be classes that are teaching supposed "unobjectionable and universal knowledge". but would the GE's be the same for universities NOT under the western civ paradigm, for example in asia?.....am i just wandering down the completely wrong path with this one?
Natalie D. (Apr 30, 2008 8:51 PM PDT) yes because there is more to history than the triumph of democracy from the ancient greek to the us constitution
Natalie D. (Apr 30, 2008 8:52 PM PDT) i mean it is not a good thing and yes we do need alternatives
34 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:52 PM PDT) Daisy, great question: what would this course be like if taught in Asia?? Note that Hist 2c also fulfills the "European Traditions" requirement--why the first 1/2 devotes so much time to it. After midterm it will be much more other regions.
35 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:54 PM PDT) I wouldn't say GE focus on "unobjectionable" knowledge--depends on who's opinion we ask. Old Western Civ text didn't have any women, and once women became professors, they objected
36 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:56 PM PDT) And on objections to GEs: we had two new things students wanted to add: LGBTQ (alternative sexualities), which didn't get off the ground, and Environmental--sounded like you guys were more positive about that?
Brandt H. (Apr 30, 2008 8:56 PM PDT) what is popular soverignty
Natalie D. (Apr 30, 2008 8:56 PM PDT) believe its power residing in the people
Natalie D. (Apr 30, 2008 8:56 PM PDT) and thank you prof
37 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 8:57 PM PDT) sovereignty: where does power reside, who calls the shots--kings, elites, men with property, women too? former felons, current prisoners?
Natalie D. (Apr 30, 2008 8:57 PM PDT) so it doesnt just reside in the people?
Bailey F. (Apr 30, 2008 8:57 PM PDT) Ft???? anyone???
Bailey F. (Apr 30, 2008 8:57 PM PDT) Ft???? anyone???
Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 8:57 PM PDT) for the great dvide, could one argue that becasue of the economic and social wedge that was driven between the wealthy and the peasant classes, a new "middle class" emerged? this was also in conjunction with the new urbanization taking place in the west and the "world economy" taking shape...
Brittany Y. (Apr 30, 2008 9:01 PM PDT) for essay question 1 would it be ok to talk about how after interactions with multiple other global regions, Europeans adopted the idea of mercantilism, which had a few consequences after 1750...such as the mass production of sugar on the Caribbean Islands for the benefit of European motherlands?
Luis C. (Apr 30, 2008 9:01 PM PDT) What are you expecting as an answer for the ID question about World Regions
Brian B. (Apr 30, 2008 9:02 PM PDT) it got talked about above for the world regions
Jessica F. (Apr 30, 2008 9:02 PM PDT) im down for a study session in ft
38 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 9:02 PM PDT) I don't think Europeans adopted mercantilism as much as they imposed it. It was good for them--but what were the consequences for other societies?
Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 9:04 PM PDT) study session in library if anyones around
Asia H. (Apr 30, 2008 9:04 PM PDT) i'm in ft! who else?
39 Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 9:05 PM PDT) world regions: message above 8:16: we can do them by geography, by culture, by politics, or by things like the world values survey. Does it make a difference which one we choose?//Why does our textbook choose the regions it does, and devote lots of pages to some, just a paragraph to others?

  • 26. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:12 PM PDT) Real roots of abolition of the concept of slavery go back to the Cartwright case in mid 16th C when a Russian slave was deemed free on English land (later its official with the Somerset Decision). also, the british and american quakers wanted abolition for religious reasons
  • 27. Rebecca EF. (Apr 30, 2008 9:14 PM PDT) by the windows?
  • 28. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 9:14 PM PDT) yeah.
  • 29. Rebecca EF. (Apr 30, 2008 9:15 PM PDT) me too have you done the essay questions yet?
  • 30. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:15 PM PDT) i think a lot of foreward thinking radicals in europe realized that it woud actually be more economically stimulating to have wage labor- this way the slaves would be PRODUCERS AND CONSUMERS, it would produce more capital. thats what i said about anti-slavery move.
  • 31. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 9:16 PM PDT) No, but I have idea's for 2,3,4 already. Im conceding doing #1, way over it

  • 35. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 9:18 PM PDT) Rebecca did you want to compare I.D's?
  • 36. Rebecca EF. (Apr 30, 2008 9:19 PM PDT) yea sure im by the windows to the left of the balcony where are you?

  • 38. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:20 PM PDT) ok- essay 2. lets tackle this one. ok- so its basically asking about how the European Enlightenment (ie: new sciences, geography, medicine, economic ideas, social and political organization), influenced other regions- what did the new region take from the euro ideas? what did it reject? why?
  • 39. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:20 PM PDT) double post... awkward...
  • 40. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 9:21 PM PDT) im against the back wall
  • 41. Hong N. (Apr 30, 2008 9:21 PM PDT) some1 care to explain the significance of creole??

  • 43. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:22 PM PDT) but we cant talk about africa or islamic countries... so that leaves us with....
  • 44. Dylan L. (Apr 30, 2008 9:22 PM PDT) same question
  • 45. Dylan L. (Apr 30, 2008 9:22 PM PDT) creoles that is
  • 46. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 9:22 PM PDT) I'll move my stuff, where exactly are you?
  • 47. Rebecca EF. (Apr 30, 2008 9:23 PM PDT) right by the big balcony on the ocean side
  • 48. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:23 PM PDT) creoles were people of full-blooded European descent who were born in the Americas. During the 17th and 18th centuries. Sometimes became nationalists of their home country, ex: Simon Bolivar who was Spanish descent but was a true local of Venezuela- fought for the independence of South American countries from Spain. Ex2: American Patriots- Paul Revere. Creoles generally more radical.
  • 49. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 9:23 PM PDT) k
  • 50. Dylan Long (Apr 30, 2008 9:23 PM PDT) thank you

  • 56. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:24 PM PDT) dont ask me about math or science- thats a total shit show
  • 57. Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 9:26 PM PDT) Daisy, why can't you do Islamic countries for essay 2? Napoleon went to Egypt with his savants ... Africa would be harder given what we've covered so far, but think Stanley and Livingstone...
  • 58. Celina C. (Apr 30, 2008 9:26 PM PDT) prof. I was wondering what the significance for Oceania is as an id?
  • 59. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 9:27 PM PDT) Could I do the interaction between Cook and the Islanders?
  • 60. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:27 PM PDT) hmmm... actually now that you said that, im rereading the question and it makes sense to use islamic countries- thanks!
  • 61. Rheannon M. (Apr 30, 2008 9:27 PM PDT) The way the prompt is written, it sounded like we were not allowed to do those two regions.
  • 62. Rheannon M.(Apr 30, 2008 9:27 PM PDT) Good to know!
  • 63. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:27 PM PDT) exactly
  • 64. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:27 PM PDT) exactly
  • 65. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:27 PM PDT) exactly
  • 66. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 9:28 PM PDT) oh and rebecca are you at a table or cube?
  • 67. Julia R. (Apr 30, 2008 9:28 PM PDT) that was my issue as well
  • 68. Julia R. (Apr 30, 2008 9:28 PM PDT) that was my issue as well
  • 69. Hong N. (Apr 30, 2008 9:29 PM PDT) i agree
  • 70. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 9:29 PM PDT) Rebecca are you at a table or cube?

  • 72. Rebecca EF. (Apr 30, 2008 9:30 PM PDT) do you wanna meet somewhere so we dont have to awkwardly wander around trying to figure out who we are?
  • 73. Natalie D. (Apr 30, 2008 9:30 PM PDT) what date would be sufficient for the anti-slavery movement, since different countries abolished it at different dates
  • 74. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 9:31 PM PDT) You know the 4 study room's go there
  • 75. Rebecca EF. (Apr 30, 2008 9:32 PM PDT) k
  • 76. Kyrsten L. (Apr 30, 2008 9:33 PM PDT) Hey Matthew what is your number I may want to join you and Rebecca in a little bit
  • 77. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 9:34 PM PDT) 949-212-6693, yours?
  • 78. Hong N. (Apr 30, 2008 9:34 PM PDT) daisy- i added u on facebook
  • 79. Paco W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:34 PM PDT) library 2nd floor :)
  • 80. Kyrsten L. (Apr 30, 2008 9:34 PM PDT) 209-401-7221
  • 81. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 9:35 PM PDT) rebecca where u at?

April 30, 2008, 9:36pm-midnight (back to top)

  • 1. Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 9:36 PM PDT) Daisy, the prompt just points out that the chapter 14 doesn't cover those regions sufficiently, so students should look for that in the textbook.
  • 2. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:37 PM PDT) got it!
  • 3. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:37 PM PDT) got it![multiple postings indicate server was slow and people couldn't tell whether their text was being accepted]
  • 4. Natalie D. (Apr 30, 2008 9:37 PM PDT) i saw earlier in the chat people were pointing out Britains abolition of the slave trade, for the id is that what you want us to focus on
  • 5. Christopher D. (Apr 30, 2008 9:38 PM PDT) how much longer are you guys going to be at the library?
  • 6. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 9:41 PM PDT) Prof. Marcuse was using Cook and the islanders a viable choice for essay question #2?
  • 7. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:42 PM PDT) really?
  • 8. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:42 PM PDT) really?
  • 9. Daisy W. (Apr 30, 2008 9:42 PM PDT) really?
  • 10. Joseph K.(Apr 30, 2008 9:42 PM PDT) Professor...would the idea that political, social and even religious "change" was backed by those who felt that those changes could better accomodaed their own economic opportunities? Meaning did economic change first come about, then other changes manifest themselves later from a "new" economy?
  • 11. Celina C. (Apr 30, 2008 9:45 PM PDT) i reiterate my question, what is the significance if we were to do Oceania as an ID?
  • 12. Matthew D. (Apr 30, 2008 9:49 PM PDT) for the world regions ID should we just list the "9 world regions" that prof marcuse used in the first lecture, or should we just explain that you can divide the world up in different groupings of regions
  • 13. Joseph K.(Apr 30, 2008 9:51 PM PDT) Matthew...i'm confused about that too.
  • 14. Celina C. (Apr 30, 2008 9:51 PM PDT) first of all there are 10 world regions, he forgot africa remember....and chances are a list is not gonna cut it, you should try explain the significance or why the regions are divides up like there are
  • 15. Matthew D. (Apr 30, 2008 9:53 PM PDT) but i am asking if he wants us to use those regions he gave us
  • 16. Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 9:53 PM PDT) whoa, just coming back
  • 17. Celina C. (Apr 30, 2008 9:54 PM PDT) i think earlier in the chat he discussed that you can use the regions he said or divide it up differently, but you have to explain why its divided like that
  • 18. Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 9:54 PM PDT) world regions: no, just listing isn't enough, need to explain the basis for choosing. What changes when you choose different regions? That indicates what might be significant.
  • 19. Matthew D. (Apr 30, 2008 9:56 PM PDT) Ok that makes sense, thanks professor and celina
  • 20. Joseph K.(Apr 30, 2008 9:56 PM PDT) Professor...would the idea that political, social and even religious "change" was backed by those who felt that those changes could better accomodaed their own economic opportunities? Meaning did economic change first come about, then other changes manifest themselves later from a "new" economy?
  • 21. Ryan D. (Apr 30, 2008 9:56 PM PDT) So I assume the professor has the IDs ready by now, lets use telepathy to steal the ideas out of his head
  • 22. Celina C. (Apr 30, 2008 9:56 PM PDT) your welcome matthew, glad it helped
  • 23. Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 9:57 PM PDT) Joseph's question: I'm not sure I understand--but the idea that the economic situation of the people determines their positions on other issues is one Marx would like (and he's pretty smart)
  • 24. Alison W. (Apr 30, 2008 10:00 PM PDT) the significance of the safavid empire?
  • 25. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 10:01 PM PDT) prof. marcuse for question #2, would cooks interaction with the islanders work?
  • 26. Jacob Kubrin (Apr 30, 2008 10:03 PM PDT) I have that the significance of the Safavid Empire was that it shows that "culture matters" since it gave Shiism a home base in the Middle East after the empire fell.
  • 27. Alison W. (Apr 30, 2008 10:04 PM PDT) yeah that sounds right. i just can't find my notes. haha. thanks!
  • 28. Asia H. (Apr 30, 2008 10:11 PM PDT) would referring to the "who" of battle of the pamphlets as the bourgeoisie be...not wrong? haha
  • 29. Asia H. (Apr 30, 2008 10:11 PM PDT) would referring to the "who" of battle of the pamphlets as the bourgeoisie be...not wrong? haha
  • 30. Celina C. (Apr 30, 2008 10:24 PM PDT) Celina C. (Apr 30, 2008 9:26 PM PDT) prof. I was wondering what the significance for Oceania is as an id?
  • 31. Celina C. (Apr 30, 2008 10:25 PM PDT) i know that you have a lot of questions to answer but i am a firm believer in getting a lot of sL.p before an exam and i really want to finish this up
  • 32. Celina C. (Apr 30, 2008 10:40 PM PDT) ok nevermind
  • 33. Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 10:57 PM PDT) Cook & Oceania would be a dead ringer as a choice for 2.
  • 34. Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 10:59 PM PDT) signif. of Oceania: why even bother including it in the textbook? Is there anything we can learn from a culture that doesn't accumulate surplus?
  • 35. Stephanie H. (Apr 30, 2008 11:00 PM PDT) How would you describe materialist conception of history?
  • 36. Stephanie H. (Apr 30, 2008 11:00 PM PDT) How would you describe materialist conception of history?
  • 37. Stephanie H. (Apr 30, 2008 11:00 PM PDT) How would you describe materialist conception of history?
  • 38. Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 11:02 PM PDT) In a section today someone mistook Marx's materialism for today's materialistic preoccupation with our gadgets & stuff. He meant the material basis of survival, of living long enough to have kids and ensure that they will survive to grow up.
  • 39. Stephanie H. (Apr 30, 2008 11:04 PM PDT) For the South Atlantic Slave Trade what exactly should i focus on considering the fact that it is so broad...
  • 40. Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 11:04 PM PDT) The core idea of the materialist conception is that no matter how many factors are causing things to happen, the core survival economics, how basic goods (food, clothing, shelter, fuel) are produced will ultimately trump the other factors, over the long run.
  • 41. Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 11:05 PM PDT) Last on materialist conception: BUT Marx may not have been right, at least not for societies that are way beyond subsistence (like the ones on the right of the world values survey graphic.
  • 42. Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 11:06 PM PDT) South Atlantic s.t.: we talked about this at the beginning of the chat, shortly after 8. see above
  • 43. Gabriela D. (Apr 30, 2008 11:07 PM PDT) for essay question 2 is it ok to compare european cultural interactions with china?
  • 44. Alexandra G. (Apr 30, 2008 11:07 PM PDT) Just wondering for choice 2, apart from cook and oceania, could one also discuss the hybrid cultures that specifically arose from Europe's colonization of the Americas
  • 45. Stephanie H. (Apr 30, 2008 11:07 PM PDT) ok..thanks
  • 46. Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 11:08 PM PDT) on 2: absolutely, tho it might be easier to focus solely on native peoples
  • 47. Peter C. (Apr 30, 2008 11:11 PM PDT) Im not sure if this question has been asked..and sorry if it has been already, but can we use toussaint and the Haitian Revolution for essay 4 or does it not fully correspond with what essay 4 is asking
  • 48. Gabriela D. (Apr 30, 2008 11:12 PM PDT) eliminate atleast one id... :)...
  • 49. Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 11:13 PM PDT) Sure, Haiti is a good example, altho in this case the new paradigm did succeed, at least for a while (we--US--didn't help and still don't).
  • 50. Peter C. (Apr 30, 2008 11:14 PM PDT) ok great...thanks
  • 51. Alexandra G. (Apr 30, 2008 11:16 PM PDT) In relation to essay 4, could one discuss the taiping rebellion?
  • 52. Harold Marcuse (Apr 30, 2008 11:17 PM PDT) btw, someone asked about curving grades, I post the distributions for this class in past years, when it wasn't so big.: http://marcuse.faculty.history.ucsb.edu/classes/grading.htm#h1
  • 53. Laura S. (Apr 30, 2008 11:18 PM PDT) for question 1 i was wondering if we could use the American revolutionary economic cause i.e. the different taxes that the colonists were being forced to pay by England to parliament.

  • 54. Emily A. (Apr 30, 2008 11:51 PM PDT) .
  • 55. Emily A. (Apr 30, 2008 11:51 PM PDT) .
  • 56. Matthew S. (Apr 30, 2008 11:56 PM PDT) Who else is completly over this
  • 57. Brian D. (Apr 30, 2008 11:58 PM PDT) does anyone know what the "f" and "ff" means next to the page numbers
  • 58. Jessica F. (May 1, 2008 12:02 AM PDT) text book page number
  • 59. Brian D. (May 1, 2008 12:04 AM PDT) yeah ok, but why do some have "f"s "ff"s and some not
  • 60. Jessica F. (May 1, 2008 12:11 AM PDT) both produce the pages that the info can be found on. i wouldnt read too much into "f" vs "ff"
  • 61. Jessica F. (May 1, 2008 12:12 AM PDT) probably good to spend more attention on the info and figuring out what you need for the test at this point. not what "f" or "ff" means
  • 62. Elvira O. (May 1, 2008 12:24 AM PDT) has anyone figured a way to approach the essays?
  • 63. Stephanie H. (May 1, 2008 12:25 AM PDT) can someone give me some pointers on mercantalism

10:26-11:46am next morning: Prof looked, but didn't stay (back to top)

  • 1. James B. (May 1, 2008 6:32 AM PDT) #
  • 2. Diego O. (May 1, 2008 9:47 AM PDT) does anyone know how the french revolution affected other regions??
  • 3. Harold Marcuse (May 1, 2008 10:26 AM PDT) f means "following" (page), ff following pageS
  • 4. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 10:29 AM PDT) ill pay someone if they give me the answers to essays 2 and 4
  • 5. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 10:29 AM PDT) jk
  • 6. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 10:29 AM PDT) hows everyone coming along?
  • 7. Matthew B. (May 1, 2008 10:32 AM PDT) shitty
  • 8. Julia DG. (May 1, 2008 10:32 AM PDT) so for the first essay would it be a good idea to write about the industrial revolution and then the enlightenment? or would the slave trade and then the abolition of it be better?
  • 9. Matthew S. (May 1, 2008 10:33 AM PDT) Prof. Marcuse, on essay #2 im talking about the interaction between cook and the islanders; for antiquarian account do I just need to explain how they colonized the area, I understand monu and critical though
  • 10. Julia DG. (May 1, 2008 10:33 AM PDT) badly btw
  • 11. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 10:50 AM PDT) hey mathew check your phone
  • 12. Emily A. (May 1, 2008 10:50 AM PDT) for antiquarian you just give an account of the facts without a bias either way and without saying why they did what they did
  • 13. Emily A. (May 1, 2008 10:50 AM PDT) monumental and critical provide the why and the bias
  • 14. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 10:51 AM PDT) oh nice that answers my question too thanks emily
  • 15. Emily A. (May 1, 2008 10:51 AM PDT) no problem
  • 16. Diego O. (May 1, 2008 10:51 AM PDT) what would be an example of antiquarian account about elightenment??
  • 17. Diego O. (May 1, 2008 10:52 AM PDT) what would be an example of antiquarian account in regards to enlightenment??
  • 18. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 10:53 AM PDT) can you elaborate slightly more on monumental and critical
  • 19. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 10:53 AM PDT) i cant understand it too well from the reader
  • 20. Emily A. (May 1, 2008 10:53 AM PDT) this is what i understood from my section...
  • 21. Diego O. (May 1, 2008 10:54 AM PDT) so in antiquarian, we should state all the facts about the issue we are going to talk about??
  • 22. Emily A. (May 1, 2008 10:55 AM PDT) if you were writing an essay on cook/europe's influence on oceania, a monumental perspective could be describing the triumphs europe made there and why they felt they should imperialize
  • 23. Emily A. (May 1, 2008 10:56 AM PDT) the critical perspective could be the account from the native peoples describing how it hurt their livelihood in that they were ridden with disease and forced west
  • 24. Emily A. (May 1, 2008 10:56 AM PDT) if that makes sense
  • 25. Matthew S. (May 1, 2008 10:56 AM PDT) As in how the implimented the wool industry and new agriculture
  • 26. Matthew S. (May 1, 2008 10:56 AM PDT) for monumental

  • 38. Emily A. (May 1, 2008 11:01 AM PDT) getting the "uncivilized" out of europe
  • 39. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 11:01 AM PDT) so u have implimented the wool industry, brought in new agriculture, made it "civilized". thats what i got so far for the critical part of essay 2?
  • 40. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 11:02 AM PDT) is that for the critical part
  • 41. Emily A. (May 1, 2008 11:02 AM PDT) no
  • 42. Matthew S. (May 1, 2008 11:02 AM PDT) monu

  • 45. Stephanie H. (May 1, 2008 11:05 AM PDT) so for the anti- part we can discuss things that cook has achieved etc., or am i off?
  • 46. Matthew S. (May 1, 2008 11:22 AM PDT) anyone know the time period for creoles?
  • 47. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 11:23 AM PDT) i dont know if that will be a big deal for that term
  • 48. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 11:23 AM PDT) hopefully not
  • 49. Matthew S. (May 1, 2008 11:24 AM PDT) we need to at least put a century
  • 50. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 11:24 AM PDT) ya
  • 51. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 11:25 AM PDT) 17th century maybe...creoles getting bigger
  • 52. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 11:25 AM PDT) im sure they began to be recognized in the 1600's sometime
  • 53. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 11:25 AM PDT) but im not 100%
  • 54. Pedro C. (May 1, 2008 11:34 AM PDT) world regions? anyone know this
  • 55. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 11:39 AM PDT) for essay 4 can we can talk about the Jacobins or no?
  • 56. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 11:40 AM PDT) prof. said I could talk about the Haitian Revolution..although its not really the best example
  • 57. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 11:40 AM PDT) but if i can use the jacobins then that would make much more sense and be a better example
  • 58. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 11:41 AM PDT) any quick responses...please
  • 59. Emily A. (May 1, 2008 11:42 AM PDT) why wouldnt you be able to talk about the jacobins that seems like a good example
  • 60. Matthew S. (May 1, 2008 11:43 AM PDT) I seriously can't wait till this midterm is over..
  • 61. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 11:43 AM PDT) ok ya ill use them...i just wasnt 100% sure thanks again emily

  • 64. Emily A. (May 1, 2008 11:44 AM PDT) its hard when you want to wait for hte study guide
  • 65. Matthew S. (May 1, 2008 11:44 AM PDT) yeah..
  • 66. Matthew S. (May 1, 2008 11:45 AM PDT) 1 1/2 days prior isn't ample time in my opinion
  • 67. Emily A. (May 1, 2008 11:46 AM PDT) well good luck everybody i'm going to go study
  • 68. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 11:46 AM PDT) ya ive had so much too...another midterm tommorow
  • 69. Peter C. (May 1, 2008 11:46 AM PDT) and a paper

May 17-18, 2008, 2-3:30pm: online office hour regarding paper topics (back to top)

  • 1. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:02 PM PDT) So if you have questions for the prof, I'm here
  • 2. Emily A. (May 17, 2008 2:07 PM PDT) Prof, I was a little confused after section with jose luis whether we had to relate our paper to specific world historical events in order to correlate it with the class or if analyzing paradigms or explaining how the speaker may have neglected to account for other circumstances (EIEIO) effecting the cause would suffice in connecting to the class content
  • 3. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:08 PM PDT) I don't really understand what you want for OUR thesis.....mine has to do with the guatemalan massacre and how the director's intention was for us to think outside the western civ model paradigm....is this relevant to what you expect?
  • 4. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:08 PM PDT) ok--what event did you do?
  • 5. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:09 PM PDT) Your thesis isn't as important in this case--you need to have a question and do research before you can formulate it. However, before you ask the question, you probably have a hypothesis in mind.
  • 6. Emily A. (May 17, 2008 2:09 PM PDT) I went to 'Got PhD' a discussion on the lack of minorities (specifically latinos) getting doctorate degrees and what may prevent those minority groups from getting such degrees
  • 7. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:10 PM PDT) so for Nueva Linda, if you think outside the WCiv paradigm, do you gain any insights? See new questions to ask? New factors at work you hadn't considered before? If so, you can formulate questions based on that.
  • 8. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:10 PM PDT) So I have to focus on something I question? and do research? I thought this wasn't a research paper or one with my opinions......?
  • 9. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:12 PM PDT) Got PhD: so, what were some of those factors? Do they conform to common sense? Your experience, or the experience of those you know? Have people/institutions developed programs to mitigate the impact of those factors?
  • 10. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:12 PM PDT) Ashley, it certainly is a research paper, but not one where you can just state opinions.
  • 11. Emily A. (May 17, 2008 2:13 PM PDT) That's the direction I have been going, however, in section my TA said that in order to relate our event to history 2C we should discuss a world event outside of our issue that parallels it
  • 12. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:14 PM PDT) Well the insights I gain are about the corruption in less-developed countries ...and the lack of commitment to the peace accords, as well as the negligence of more advanced countries...I just don't know how to tie all ofthat together for this paper
  • 13. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:14 PM PDT) Some topics won't relate very well to a world event
  • 14. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:14 PM PDT) Well the insights I gain are about the corruption in less-developed countries ...and the lack of commitment to the peace accords, as well as the negligence of more advanced countries...I just don't know how to tie all ofthat together for this paper
  • 15. Stefan G. (May 17, 2008 2:15 PM PDT) As far as Nueva Linda is concerned, you mentioned in an email that we should look into the 1966 Peace Accords and violence in the country. How would we then tie researching about the Peace Accords into making a thesis about the massacre? Does the paper need to be directly about the massacre or can we branch out and write about related incidents that were responsible for the instability in Guatemala.
  • 16. Stefan G. (May 17, 2008 2:16 PM PDT) Also, is there a requirement for having a certain number of print sources or can they all be digital if they're from reliable publishers
  • 17. Pedro C. (May 17, 2008 2:16 PM PDT) did anyone do the nueva linda event?
  • 18. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:16 PM PDT) Not all topics will relate to a world history event, but access to higher education in colonial societies might in this case
  • 19. Pedro C. (May 17, 2008 2:16 PM PDT) or go?
  • 20. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:16 PM PDT) I gained insight into the corruption of less-developed countries and the negligence of more advanced countries, but how do i tie that together for the paper
  • 21. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:16 PM PDT) The outside sources don't have to be printed. But indeed, they should be reliable/verifiable.
  • 22. Pedro C. (May 17, 2008 2:17 PM PDT) did anyone attend the nueva linda event?
  • 23. Emily A. (May 17, 2008 2:17 PM PDT) Are we required to make that connection?? or is it sufficient that i use some of the resources discussed in lecture such as paradigms, eieio, etc?
  • 24. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:17 PM PDT) Were the Guatemala peace accords in '66 or '96?
  • 25. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:18 PM PDT) I gained insight into the corruption of less-developed countries and the negligence of more advanced ones, but how does that tie in to the paper
  • 26. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:18 PM PDT) That was one angle I discussed with one group, since it seemed that provisions of that accord allowed squatters (or not)
  • 27. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:18 PM PDT) I gained insight into the corruption of less-developed countries and the negligence of more advanced ones, but how does that tie in to the paper
  • 28. Stefan G. (May 17, 2008 2:18 PM PDT) sorry 96, typo there
  • 29. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:19 PM PDT) Emily, the TAs have L.way to set standards in accordance to what they emphasize in section, but within the overall parameters of the assignment.
  • 30. Danielle M. (May 17, 2008 2:19 PM PDT) My TA told my section that after we have done our research we need to narrow our event down and come up with one "big question." I understand how to narrow my event down, but I was just a little confused on what exactly this "big question" is suppose to be and where we fit it into our essay?
  • 31. Pedro C. (May 17, 2008 2:19 PM PDT) peace accords were in 96
  • 32. Emily A. (May 17, 2008 2:19 PM PDT) ok thank you
  • 33. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:19 PM PDT) When is Anil coming back? He never really took time to talk to us about the paper and then he just left
  • 34. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:19 PM PDT) If your TA wants to see a connection to a world event, that will certainly boost your grade (and is a great thing anyhow). However, there can be "A" papers that might not do that.
  • 35. Jonathan F. (May 17, 2008 2:20 PM PDT) can our question to research on be one that was asked in our presentation, such as "why do nuclear weapons exist?"
  • 36. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:20 PM PDT) Anil never told me exactly when he was going or returning, but he implied he'd be at the TA seminar on Monday.
  • 37. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:21 PM PDT) Nuclear weapons: that's a huge question, too big for a 4-page paper.
  • 38. Pedro C. (May 17, 2008 2:21 PM PDT) what are some important key factors of the nueva linda event besides the peace accords?
  • 39. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:22 PM PDT) Nuclear: more like, if the speaker said they exist to prevent conflict, look at one case, and see if conflict was prevented. Like between Pakistan and India. Or Cuban missile crisis? Would there have been direct warfare if we had NOT had nuclear weapons?
  • 40. Danielle M. (May 17, 2008 2:22 PM PDT) What exactly is a "big question"?
  • 41. Marley P. (May 17, 2008 2:23 PM PDT) I agree with Danielle. Can you explain what you mean by the "big question"? And also, do we need to use counter-arguments?
  • 42. Lauren W. (May 17, 2008 2:23 PM PDT) Yah...i'm confused because I have only found research that agrees with the speaker at my event said.
  • 43. Pedro C. (May 17, 2008 2:23 PM PDT) did anyone attend the nueva linda event?
  • 44. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:23 PM PDT) It's just unfotunate because he never really took the time to tell us HIS expectations for the paper....which makes it that much more confusing. Would it be relevant as a question to challenge the notion that the kidnapping of Hector Reyes was the REASON the massacre unfolded? isn't that kind of monumental history?
  • 45. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:23 PM PDT) Nueva linda: role of private armies, corporate interests, gov't serving landOWNERS, but not the people who work the land. What access people have to institutional power (rich hire armies and have gov't, the poor can -- vote, maybe)
  • 46. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:24 PM PDT) A "big question" is something you can spend years researching and not come up with a definitive answer
  • 47. Danielle M. (May 17, 2008 2:24 PM PDT) Yea I agree with Lauren
  • 48. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:24 PM PDT) Lauren, what was your speaker?
  • 49. Lauren W. (May 17, 2008 2:24 PM PDT) Wilson
  • 50. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:25 PM PDT) I can't imagine an event where SOMEbody doesn't have a differing opinion
  • 51. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:25 PM PDT) would questioning the kidnapping of hector reyes as the prime cause of the campesino strikes and the massacre be relevant? isn't that somewhat monumental history?
  • 52. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:25 PM PDT) The Wilson event--if you stayed for the questions, there were plenty of people attacking his thesis
  • 53. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:25 PM PDT) it's not considering other key factors from the past and present....as well as the peace accords
  • 54. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:25 PM PDT) it's not considering other key factors from the past and present....as well as the peace accords
  • 55. Lauren W. (May 17, 2008 2:25 PM PDT) was his thesis that america is exceptional?
  • 56. Kylie L. (May 17, 2008 2:26 PM PDT) Wilson was only able to have one side of his argument in his presentation. In the book there are numerous!
  • 57. Kylie L. (May 17, 2008 2:26 PM PDT) Very true, there were a lot of people doing that.
  • 58. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:26 PM PDT) Counter arguments: I think those turn a "B" paper into an "A" paper. You aren't just making a best case for one side, but engaging the arguments of those who disagree
  • 59. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:26 PM PDT) because there were so many other key factors, and the peace accords......maybe the strikes would have happened anyway without that kidnapping
  • 60. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:27 PM PDT) Ashley, do you think if the landlord had been kidnapped, he'd have been found by now?
  • 61. Pedro C. (May 17, 2008 2:27 PM PDT) what would be some important factors of the nueva linda besides the peace accords?
  • 62. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:27 PM PDT) Or ask about what CAUSED the strike
  • 63. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:28 PM PDT) well, yeah because more importance is placed on the wealthy. and i don't think ONE thing cause the strike. it was a multitude of things but the documentary somewhat makes it seems as is the kidnapping was the main cause
  • 64. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:28 PM PDT) Nueva linda: what were the landowner's interests? Why did he decide (suddenly) that he needed the farmers off the land?
  • 65. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:29 PM PDT) kidnapping may have been the trigger, but causes can go very deep
  • 66. Stefan G. (May 17, 2008 2:29 PM PDT) Would exploring how the peace accords are related to the kidnapping of Hector Reyes and consequently the strike be a good way to go with trying to find new research info? Was the Landowner's decision based on something from the peace accords?
  • 67. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:30 PM PDT) thats why....would challenging the notion of one sole cause be considered a big question for the paper
  • 68. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:31 PM PDT) clearly economic dissatisfaction was a cause motivating the farmers--once off the land what then? And the landlord wanted to make money, maybe with cash crops for export, instead of subsistance agriculture (I'm guessing here)
  • 69. Kylie L. (May 17, 2008 2:31 PM PDT) Is it ok to explore the arguments in the Wilson book even though it is different from his presentation? The presentation was only able to address one side while the book is full of different arguments for different areas.
  • 70. Marley P. (May 17, 2008 2:31 PM PDT) Do we discuss the speaker's thesis in the summary portion of the paper, or do we need to make it an entirely separate section of the paper?
  • 71. Danielle M. (May 17, 2008 2:31 PM PDT) I attended the Wilson event, so for the summary do we only need to give a little background info on Wilson, state his argument and thesis, and then just summarize the specific part of his speech we are using?
  • 72. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:32 PM PDT) Stefan, that's what we came up with in the group. The students said Filiberto argued that there was a constant level of violence since the 96 accord--it didn't settle anything. N.L. was just one manifestation of that continuing violence. So what did the accord say that "we" (international community) thought it meant peace/end of civil war?
  • 73. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:33 PM PDT) Well, the peace accords were not abided to......indigenous peoples were supposed to gain more rights and social/political/econ. participation in guatemala.......plus the fact of their harsh working conditions and low salaries.....and the kidnapping....it can't be just one reason.
  • 74. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:33 PM PDT) Speaker's thesis should be in the summary. And again: speaker may have been arguing several things, and different people at the event may take away different arguments. You don't need to summarize EVERYTHING, just the thesis (part of) that you will focus on
  • 75. Arianna Lopez (May 17, 2008 2:34 PM PDT) I also attended the Wilson event and feel that since we are supposed to be focusing on a single essay written by someone else, shouldnt we counter the authors argument and not necessarily wilson since he is only an editor/compiler?
  • 76. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:34 PM PDT) Ashley, I'd agree. So what rights were they guaranteed? To stay on land they had worked for ... years, generations? To have a say in how that land would be worked? To get alternative public land if a private landowner took theirs away?
  • 77. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:35 PM PDT) Arianna, yes, you can (and probably should) focus more. But you can also see whether that author's essay/thesis supports the overall thesis of Wilson and Schuck
  • 78. Taylor T. (May 17, 2008 2:35 PM PDT) Professor, when it comes time to connect the speaker's argument the class, for example the EIEIO model, does the argument have to apply all facets of the model?
  • 79. Ashley E. (May 17, 2008 2:36 PM PDT) so is that a good notion to challenge because the documentary places a focus on the kidnapping as a major cause....and ive looked up evidence countering that and providing more reasons
  • 80. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:37 PM PDT) Taylor: no, the models are just to help get you thinking of things you can do research on, questions you can ask. (Tho you may also use them in framing your own thesis)
  • 81. Marley P. (May 17, 2008 2:37 PM PDT) So, we can pick parts of the EIEIO model that the event related to?
  • 82. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:37 PM PDT) Ashley, yes, looking beyond the immediate trigger is an excellent idea. The sudden event is good for movies and news stories, but it is rarely the whole story
  • 83. Brittany Y. (May 17, 2008 2:38 PM PDT) Professor, I attended the "Re-claiming the Ruins of "Japan's" Imperial Antiquity", would it be sufficient to research the modernization that took place in Japan as the result of Western influence, which led to archaeological excavations and tourism?
  • 84. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:38 PM PDT) Sure, the EIEIO model is useful because it helps to show how in some situations only some causes are at work, in other situations others.
  • 85. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:39 PM PDT) Brittany, researching the modernization is still a "big question." What aspect of it can you look at? That would be a great way to relate your topic to the course, but not easy to do research on
  • 86. Stefan G. (May 17, 2008 2:40 PM PDT) So for the Nueva Linda, as far as EIEIO goes, we could argue that Filiberto puts a lot of emphasis on the Elites and Leaders like Hector Reyes and the Landowners in a very Monumentalist fashion emphasizing a single cause leading to the massacre, so our research and paper would focus on other facts and parts of the EIEIO as not quite a counter, but supplement to the film?
  • 87. Danielle M. (May 17, 2008 2:41 PM PDT) So does that mean it is not good to look at the "big question"?
  • 88. Marley P. (May 17, 2008 2:41 PM PDT) Are we supposed to look at the "big question"?
  • 89. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:41 PM PDT) Stefan, yes, but you might not be able to be that comprehensive. Like take one or two other causes
  • 90. Brittany Y. (May 17, 2008 2:42 PM PDT) Hmm, how about comparing the modernization of Japan to the Haussmannization of Paris?
  • 91. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:42 PM PDT) Marley, the big q should be in the background, but you can't answer it. Some people spend their whole lives and many books trying to do that. You should pick one tiny case study where you can test that big question
  • 92. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:44 PM PDT) Brittany, that is still pretty big. I'm not sure what the event thesis was, but looking at how Japan thought about/treated other historical artifacts in pre-Western imperialist times
  • 93. Taylor T. (May 17, 2008 2:45 PM PDT) Jeffrey Sachs argument was that humans have not adjusted well enough to the world's rapidly developing economy. I agree with his argument, but what would be a good way to find evidence of a counter-argument?
  • 94. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:45 PM PDT) What comes to my mind is the current conflict between Yale univ. and Peru, since Yale students (Hiram Bingham, model for Indiana Jones) took bones & artifacts from Macchu Pichu ca. 1905, and Yale doesn't want to return
  • 95. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:46 PM PDT) Stealing a past and arguing that you care for it better than the people whose past it is is typical imperialist mentality. I showed that film clip where Henry Louis Gates was eyeing the "decaying" books in Timbuktu.
  • 96. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:47 PM PDT) Sachs: maybe that humans don't WANT to adapt? They like living a simpler life, without participating in the global economy?
  • 97. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:47 PM PDT) That might be what was going in in Nueva Linda, too.
  • 98. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:50 PM PDT) Counterargument for people not adjusting: many people in Iran after 1979 have rejected Western values (Barbies, fashions, liberated women, ...). But they have "adapted" in other ways: latest weapons technology ...
  • 99. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:50 PM PDT) So maybe they are selectively adapting?
  • 100. Taylor T. (May 17, 2008 2:54 PM PDT) So could another example possibly be that we are selectively adapting through technology? ex. adapted to hole in ozone through technology.
  • 101. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:56 PM PDT) I don't think of ozone hole adaptations in the same way, rather more cultural than environmental
  • 102. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:58 PM PDT) like changing our food consumption to eat local or less beef to combat global warming, or vegetarian to fight hunger. Or eating a different staple: rice is really expensive now, so the World Food Org is trying to get some African countries where people only eat rice to start eating potatoes
  • 103. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 2:59 PM PDT) Or the English switching to coal after they burned up so much wood in the late 18th c. (But what was the original question?)
  • 104. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:02 PM PDT) Oh, this was Jeffrey Sachs. So why do people HAVE TO adapt to the global economy? Why must they? Why should they? I have a great clip from Thomas Friedman's book "The Lexus and the Olive Tree", where he makes up a dialog between a US secretary of state and I think it's the Syrian president. The US wants the Syrians to buy Lexuses, the Syrian knows his people want to live under their olive trees
  • 105. Jonathan F. (May 17, 2008 3:02 PM PDT) i'm still kinda confused because the nuclear weapons presentation was very broad. would a question such as "why don't nations use nuclear weapons?" work?
  • 106. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:04 PM PDT) Jonathan, even that question is still pretty big. Looking at one case where they didn't use them would be enough.
  • 107. Matthew S. (May 17, 2008 3:05 PM PDT) Has the Horowitz lecture been talked about already?
  • 108. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:06 PM PDT) Or you could start with the big question: if no one has used a nuclear weapon since we did in 1945, why do so many countries want to have them? Then look at one case (N. Korea, Iran, India, Pakistan, France) where this issue was debated, see if it confirms the "what are nuclear weapons for" question
  • 109. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:06 PM PDT) No, I'd love to hear about the Horowitz lecture
  • 110. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:06 PM PDT) Just skimming back to unanswered questions above:
  • 111. Matthew S. (May 17, 2008 3:06 PM PDT) If not, prof. Marcuse I've been researching him and realized how many arguments he has created. I have decided to focus on his issue between Israel and Palestine.
  • 112. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:07 PM PDT) 2:31 PM PDT) I attended the Wilson event, so for the summary do we only need to give a little background info on Wilson, state his argument and thesis, and then just summarize the specific part of his speech we are using?
  • 113. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:07 PM PDT) Yes, mainly summarizing the point you want to focus on is fine, esp. when the talk was so broad
  • 114. Matthew S. (May 17, 2008 3:08 PM PDT) I've been trying to narrow down and my thesis could potentially be something such as; Is the conflict in the Middle East between Isreal and Palestine a result of territorial dispute or racial hatred.
  • 115. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:08 PM PDT) On Horowitz, that would be fine. He probably had a whole cannonade of arguments he tossed out. Seeing what evidence he presented to support any one of them would be important, checking up on that
  • 116. Matthew S. (May 17, 2008 3:09 PM PDT) Horowitz made it clear that ALL muslims are directly or indirectly connected to terrorism and want to kill all Jew's and Americans
  • 117. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:10 PM PDT) territory vs. race, yes, a good starting point. As with most things, it could be a mix of both. But you could look back pre-World War II and see how happy (or not) the Palestinians were with Zionists settling in their country (protectorate). How did their leaders react to Balfour's 1919 promise of a Jewish state?
  • 118. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:12 PM PDT) When a speaker goes way overboard like that: ALL want to do this or that, it's not hard to disprove. I was just reading in the LA Times in the past couple of days about a woman who wrote a book documenting how happy many muslims are living in Western countries
  • 119. Matthew S. (May 17, 2008 3:12 PM PDT) He doesn't seperate modeterate muslims from radical ones
  • 120. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:13 PM PDT) Jimmy Carter was just in the Middle East negotiating with some Arab leaders who have little interest in killing all Americans
  • 121. Matthew S. (May 17, 2008 3:14 PM PDT) I've read somewhere that he denounces Carter for "appeasing" terrorists
  • 122. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:15 PM PDT) Moderate/radical is still a pretty big dichotomy. All UCSB students drink too much. All rich UCSB students drink too much isn't much better at differentiating. Finding some characteristic that might relate to drinking, like (if you like pop psychology): all bored and dissatisfied UCSB students drink too much ... And then: what does that have to do with UCSB?
  • 123. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:17 PM PDT) Yes, and yesterday in Israel Bush said that anyone who would even talk to Arab leaders is an appeaser, comparing Obama (without naming him) to the British who appeased Hitler (naming him).
  • 124. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:18 PM PDT) My point is: instead of saying Islam has something to do with hating Jews and US-Americans, let's look at why some of those Muslims hate Jews (some, all?) and Americans.
  • 125. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:20 PM PDT) Just like "UCSB" doesn't necessarily cause drinking too much, since there are plenty of UCSB students who never drink. Which doesn't mean that some characteristics of UCSB might not play a role in making it easy to drink too much (like the IV community and the types of people its reputation attracts).
  • 126. Harold Marcuse (May 17, 2008 3:21 PM PDT) Ok, I've got to go, I'll be back tomorrow at 2.
  • 127. Matthew S. (May 17, 2008 3:21 PM PDT) appriciate your time prof.
  • 128. Taylor T. (May 17, 2008 3:25 PM PDT) Thanks Professor
  • 129. Pedro C. (May 17, 2008 3:37 PM PDT) did anyone do the nueva linda event?

May 18, 2008, 2-4pm (+a few): online office hour re: papers (back to top)

  • 1. Jessica F. (May 18, 2008 1:03 PM PDT) is anyone doing their paper on the MADE IN LA movie?
  • 2. Steven L. (May 18, 2008 1:05 PM PDT) is anyone doing American Exceptionalism?
  • 3. Elvira O. (May 18, 2008 1:40 PM PDT) I am doing American Exceptionalism and still cant figure what my thesis is..
  • 4. Elvira O. (May 18, 2008 1:41 PM PDT) is anyone having trouble with it as well?
  • 5. Kimberly J. (May 18, 2008 1:52 PM PDT) Hey did anyone do Tak for Alt?
  • 6. Devin O. (May 18, 2008 2:00 PM PDT) Yo is the professor in the house
  • 7. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:00 PM PDT) I'm available for questions again--Prof. Marcuse
  • 8. Kimberly J. (May 18, 2008 2:03 PM PDT) Hello Professor I went to Tak for Alt: Survival of the Human Spirit
  • 9. Kimberly J. (May 18, 2008 2:03 PM PDT) and there really wasn't a question to the event
  • 10. Devin O. (May 18, 2008 2:04 PM PDT) hey Professor I went to the mcc talk on racial differences in college and the PHD programs and it primarily gave stats on the low representation of minorities compared to their population. He gave a few reasons for why but this is what I would like to focus on for my paper. I am researching disparities in education and academic tracks as well as federal funding and how tax distribution affects low income and especially minority communities going to college
  • 11. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:04 PM PDT) Did Tak for Alt imply what caused the Holocaust (or: what made it possible)? How about: What should people do to prevent it from happening again?
  • 12. Devin O'dea (May 18, 2008 2:05 PM PDT) hey prof I went to the talk at the mcc and why minorities are underrepresented in college and phd programs
  • 13. Devin O'dea (May 18, 2008 2:06 PM PDT) sorry didn't mean to post the last one
  • 14. Kimberly J. (May 18, 2008 2:06 PM PDT) She mention how the Danes helped with survival of many jews
  • 15. Kimberly J. (May 18, 2008 2:07 PM PDT) and i was going to go off denmarks involvement with the holocaust
  • 16. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:07 PM PDT) Some Poles helped her too (in the convent)--so can helping people (or not) prevent genocide?
  • 17. Kimberly J. (May 18, 2008 2:07 PM PDT) okay
  • 18. Devin O. (May 18, 2008 2:07 PM PDT) Is this a good subject for research or should i have a better/more criticizing thesis of the presentation?
  • 19. Kimberly J. (May 18, 2008 2:08 PM PDT) so i should take a broader look at it
  • 20. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:08 PM PDT) Denmark was occupied by the Nazis in the war, so the govt could do little--but what DID they do? The leadership? Did she talk about the story that the king wore a yellow star? (he actually didn't)
  • 21. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:08 PM PDT) I don't know about "broader"--you should find one thing that was shown or said, that you have a question about
  • 22. Karisa M. (May 18, 2008 2:08 PM PDT) Hi prof. I have a question about American Exceptionalism. Should we only focus on his essay in his book, about criminal justice? Or are we able to use any topic within the book? And should we relate that to one of his broader ideas about the way European's see Americans?
  • 23. Kimberly J. (May 18, 2008 2:09 PM PDT) no she told the story of fisherman hiding them on their boats
  • 24. Kimberly J. (May 18, 2008 2:09 PM PDT) and how the couple nursed her
  • 25. Kimberly J. (May 18, 2008 2:09 PM PDT) back t health
  • 26. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:10 PM PDT) Were those people who helped her special in some way? Or was it more the situation that made them do what they did? Are Danes more humane than Germans (or Poles)? Or was it less dangerous for them?
  • 27. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:11 PM PDT) You could research the various motivations that rescuers had (have)--there are good books and websites on that
  • 28. Kimberly J. (May 18, 2008 2:11 PM PDT) okay i think i have and idea now! thanks a lot!
  • 29. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:12 PM PDT) Good--I hope you can pick something YOU are interested in.
  • 30. Daisy W. (May 18, 2008 2:14 PM PDT) Hello! So i attended Wilson's American Exceptionalism book lecture and i decided that i the position i was going to take is that allthough Wilson argues that America has the most political activism, after examining the history and current efforts of European political activism, it will be clear that American political activism, although very abundant, does not result in much public influence on laws. i think i may have bitten off a little more that i can chew (this would be A LOT of research)- i guess im wondering how i can tone down my essay?
  • 31. Karisa M. (May 18, 2008 2:14 PM PDT) sorry, I was asking about James Wilson in my previous question
  • 32. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:15 PM PDT) Karisa, you can focus on any essay in Wilson's book that You want. You have a lot of freedom in what you do with it.
  • 33. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:16 PM PDT) Daisy, that is indeed big. Maybe look at ONE issue/event, and compare US and "European" (a couple of countries--Europe is a big and diverse place) activisim
  • 34. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:17 PM PDT) One thing that comes to my mind is the demonstrations in the lead up to the start of the Iraq war in March 2003. Huge in London and elsewhere in Europe, but in New York and all over the US, too.
  • 35. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:18 PM PDT) Can you find some articles and websites about the peak weekend of activism (maybe in Jan or Feb. 03?) and compare?
  • 36. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:20 PM PDT) If you want to study whether activism has effected laws, a big one right now is gay marriage. Look when countries like Spain or Netherlands or Canada (don't try to do all) legalized it--why? Was there grass roots activism? Abolishing death penality, legalizing pot, abortion (lots on that) all had activists lobbying to change laws
  • 37. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:20 PM PDT) [Prof's embarrassment: should be Affected, not effected, above
  • 38. Daisy W. (May 18, 2008 2:26 PM PDT) thank you so much!!!! now i can focus on something- thanks a ton!
  • 39. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:26 PM PDT) ok, good luck
  • 40. Taylor T. (May 18, 2008 2:34 PM PDT) Professor, if we include statistics directly from the speaker, we need to put them in our works cited, right?
  • 41. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:36 PM PDT) I think if you write, "Lecturer Joan Smith said that 50% of the population lives under the poverty line..." you wouldn't have to list that, since it is the event itself. On the other hand, doing a formal citation of the event for the reference list wouldn't hurt. This is a question for your TA, and will probably vary from TA to TA.
  • 42. Taylor T. (May 18, 2008 2:36 PM PDT) Ok thanks
  • 43. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:37 PM PDT) What I think is more important is (research question...): where did the speaker get those statistics (s/he probably didn't say, but you might find out in their book or other publication, if there is one)
  • 44. Blake N. (May 18, 2008 2:38 PM PDT) prof, I'm not entirely certain how were are supposed to relate our topic, I'm doing Massacre Nueva Linda, to a historical event from the course
  • 45. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:40 PM PDT) Yesterday's chat had a long exchange about that. I think Jose Luis wanted you to link it to a historical event, right?
  • 46. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:41 PM PDT) One historical event that comes to mind is the Haitian revolution--the people working the land not wanting to let the landowners have control.
  • 47. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:43 PM PDT) Do you have an aspect of Nueva Linda you are looking at? That might determine which historical event would be more or less comparable
  • 48. Blake N. (May 18, 2008 2:44 PM PDT) well i was thinking about using the Haitian revolution, but I am not sure how we are supposed to relate it to the overall structure of the paper
  • 49. Blake N. (May 18, 2008 2:46 PM PDT) my thesis is about how it seemed that filiberto was operating under one paradigm during the film, emphasizing the kidnapping as the sole cause of the campesino revolts
  • 50. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:48 PM PDT) Hmm. Maybe looking at how getting rid of a leader (guillotining Louis 16 in the French revolution, hanging Saddam Hussein a couple of years ago) may galvanize that leader's supporters, instead of crushing a movement
  • 51. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:52 PM PDT) Again, I can't say how to fit it into your paper, unless it is an integral part of your overall argument & approach. But there are lots of examples where leaders were crucial to success (Queen Nzinga comes to mind, or in 19th c. Africa the battle of Adwa [WTWA p. 747]), or not.
  • 52. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:53 PM PDT) Maybe putting out some examples for each case (crucial and not) would be enough to illustrate that there are 2 different paradigms, and you could try to explain what other factors were at work that led to the different outcomes
  • 53. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:54 PM PDT) Yesterday we talked about the kidnapping being a trigger, not a cause, and looking deeper for causes
  • 54. Blake N. (May 18, 2008 2:58 PM PDT) hm, alright thank you very much
  • 55. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 2:58 PM PDT) ok, if there are no more questions, I'm going to sign off
  • 56. Taylor T. (May 18, 2008 2:59 PM PDT) Thanks
  • 57. Harold Marcuse (May 18, 2008 3:04 PM PDT) ok, good luck

  • 58. Peter C. (May 18, 2008 4:58 PM PDT) anybody do the lecture on David Horowitz

  • 61. Edward L. (May 18, 2008 9:11 PM PDT) dude
  • 62. Edward L. (May 18, 2008 9:11 PM PDT) I have no idea what to write about the David Horowitz
  • 63. Edward L. (May 18, 2008 9:11 PM PDT) was thinking about Radical Americans= Radical Islam

The play starts right after the "Mission Accomplished" speech presented by President Bush. I cannot figure out what to include. Thanks for any help you can give.
  • 21. Steven Ch. (May 19, 2008 5:29 PM PDT) Its cool don't worry about it.
  • 22. Steven Ch. (May 19, 2008 8:13 PM PDT) anyone? help with Plumfield, Iraq?
  • 23. Steven L. (May 19, 2008 8:27 PM PDT) does anyone know, when we identify the speakers thesis are we supposed to state it seperately before our main essay, or somehow weave it into the body of the paper?
  • 24. Adrian B. (May 19, 2008 10:47 PM PDT) for the 2-4 sources do we have to use quotes from them or can we just include them in a bibliography?
  • 25. Matthew S. (May 20, 2008 12:11 AM PDT) Who else isn't going to bed tonight

  • 38. Hart T. (Jun 8, 2008 3:45 PM PDT) the 3 worlds refers to capitalist, communism, and ones that are neither? or is it the industrialized, indstrurializing, underdeveloped definition?
  • 39. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 3:54 PM PDT) those are both the definition Prof said in lecture
  • 40. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 3:55 PM PDT) What time is Prof supposed to sign in 5?
  • 41. Hart T. (Jun 8, 2008 3:55 PM PDT) yeah 5:00
  • 42. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 4:03 PM PDT) The Cold War definition refers to the capitalist/communist, the economic definition referes to industrialized..
  • 43. Steven Ch. (Jun 8, 2008 4:18 PM PDT) Anyone wanna share ID's?
  • 44. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 4:20 PM PDT) you only need to be prepared for a max of 15 id's
  • 45. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 4:21 PM PDT) What question do you all think he will choose? Colonized one, WWI and WWII, or Three Worlds?
  • 46. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 4:54 PM PDT) the id sorbibor, is that referring to the genocide
  • 47. Cirilo R. (Jun 8, 2008 4:55 PM PDT) its the successful revolt in the concentration camp in WWII.
  • 48. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 4:57 PM PDT) oh the 1943 uprising?
  • 49. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 4:57 PM PDT) yes it was
  • 50. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 4:57 PM PDT) yes it was
  • 51. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 4:58 PM PDT) does anyone know the reason for the Ottoman Empires decline?
  • 52. Jasmine H. (Jun 8, 2008 4:59 PM PDT) anybody know about "export-oriented development"? any main points..?
  • 53. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:00 PM PDT) When did that even come up, in the book or in the lecture?
  • 54. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 5:00 PM PDT) it makes the economy unstable, because it relies too much on a few exports and opens domestic markets to foreign competition
  • 55. Jasmine H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:00 PM PDT) noo clue, i'm thinking recent lectures..? but if so i missed it
  • 56. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 5:00 PM PDT) i think its basically suppose to exploit where your country has a comparative advantage
  • 57. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 5:01 PM PDT) like a latin american country mainly exporting bananas or coffee
  • 58. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:01 PM PDT) i didn't miss a lecture and that was never in it
  • 59. Brenda T. (Jun 8, 2008 5:01 PM PDT) ANYONE KNOW ABOUT SATYAGRAHA
  • 60. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 5:01 PM PDT) but it hurts the economy in a lot of other areas
  • 61. Katherine Y. (Jun 8, 2008 5:01 PM PDT) page 46 in your reader
  • 62. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:02 PM PDT) Ya thats Ghandi philosophy of non-violent resistance
  • 63. Jasmine H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:02 PM PDT) thanks matthew! very helpful
  • 64. Brenda T. (Jun 8, 2008 5:02 PM PDT) THANKS
  • 65. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 5:02 PM PDT) no problem
  • 66. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:02 PM PDT) matt where did you find all of that?
  • 67. Lindsay G. (Jun 8, 2008 5:03 PM PDT) what are we supposed to know about Oceania for the id?
  • 68. Brian C. (Jun 8, 2008 5:03 PM PDT) what would you put for significance of the sobibor? just that it shows the Jewish resistance and it's the only death camp where people escaped?
  • 69. Sean Mceniry (Jun 8, 2008 5:03 PM PDT) Ottoman Empire: too multiethnic, fell due to the rise of nationalism. Export oriented economy i think refers to that latin american country that exported all of its bird crap and didn't really use trading W.ly.
  • 70. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:04 PM PDT) also that they liquidized it and made it into a farm
  • 71. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:04 PM PDT) trying to hide the fact that it ever existed
  • 72. Brian C. (Jun 8, 2008 5:04 PM PDT) ah i see. thanks
  • 73. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:04 PM PDT) Significance of sobibor is that it is the only concentration camp that had a successful revolt, and that it is an example of antiquarian history, because history tends to forget positive events like Sobibor because it was a part of a much broader, more negative event
  • 74. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:05 PM PDT) what is antiquarian history
  • 75. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:06 PM PDT) is an example of export oriented development, henequen?
  • 76. Brian C. (Jun 8, 2008 5:06 PM PDT) i think it's the factual aspects of history
  • 77. Brian C. (Jun 8, 2008 5:06 PM PDT) meaning not biased by one side
  • 78. Lindsay G. (Jun 8, 2008 5:07 PM PDT) Oceania anyone?
  • 79. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:08 PM PDT) what time is prof. marcuse signing on??
  • 80. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:08 PM PDT) Australia, Captain Cook....
  • 81. Jasmine H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:08 PM PDT) mumbai..? all i got was "hotspot" in global economy from the book..
  • 82. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:08 PM PDT) Epitomizes Europeans philosophy of their culture being the best and their need to extend it to all parts of the world
  • 83. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:08 PM PDT) is the date of sorbibor 1943?
  • 84. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:08 PM PDT) yes
  • 85. Lindsay G. (Jun 8, 2008 5:08 PM PDT) Oceania, post midterm, Austrialia, etc was all pre midterm
  • 86. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:09 PM PDT) sorry but was that a yes to sorbibor haley?
  • 87. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:09 PM PDT) yes it was!
  • 88. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:09 PM PDT) Hi Haley
  • 89. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:10 PM PDT) hi brandt:)

  • 93. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 5:11 PM PDT) hey for the comprehensive essay would doing French revolution, Meiji restoration, and India's decolonization work?
  • 94. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:11 PM PDT) sure
  • 95. Brenda T. (Jun 8, 2008 5:11 PM PDT) DOES ANYONE KNOW ABOUT export-oriental development?
  • 96. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:12 PM PDT) what are some examples people are using for the 1900s in the comp. essay?
  • 97. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 5:12 PM PDT) I can't wait for this class to be done..
  • 98. Christina Wiesendanger (Jun 8, 2008 5:12 PM PDT) is the professor coming??
  • 99. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:12 PM PDT) Great Depression

  • 101. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:12 PM PDT) scroll up for export oriented development
  • 102. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:12 PM PDT) oh good one thanks brandt!
  • 103. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:13 PM PDT) can anyone explain this eieio thing
  • 104. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:13 PM PDT) Jasmine - it was about Oceania and when Europe looked for new areas to colonize in the 17th and 18th century
  • 105. Steven Ch. (Jun 8, 2008 5:13 PM PDT) yes please.
  • 106. Brian C. (Jun 8, 2008 5:13 PM PDT) WWI was a Euro war, NOT a global war right?
  • 107. Hart T. (Jun 8, 2008 5:13 PM PDT) i'm doing the USSR dissolution for the comp 1900's
  • 108. Steven Ch. (Jun 8, 2008 5:13 PM PDT) explain EIEIO please someone :)
  • 109. Brenda T. (Jun 8, 2008 5:13 PM PDT) OK
  • 110. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:13 PM PDT) is an ex of export oriented development mexicos exportation of henequen
  • 111. Jasmine H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:13 PM PDT) ah ok great, thanx for clarifying
  • 112. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 5:14 PM PDT) just remember for EIEIO, its causes of change.
  • 113. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:14 PM PDT) E - Economics, I - Ideology, E - Elites/Leaders, I - Institutions, 0 - Opposition, People....I think

June 8, 5-6pm: prof arrives at review session

  1. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:14 PM PDT) Hi, Prof Marcuse here, sorry I got hung up
  2. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 5:14 PM PDT) how do economics, people, elites etc bring about change within the context of the event
  3. Cirilo R. (Jun 8, 2008 5:14 PM PDT) that chart
  4. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:14 PM PDT) If you have questions for me
  5. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 5:15 PM PDT) hey professor for the first essay about the three resistance movements in three different regions do you think bolivar, gandhi and ho chi minh would be a good three? or do gandhi and ho chi both count as asia?
  6. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:15 PM PDT) for the IDs globalization and Export oriented development what are the specifics you are looking for? Would you like an example??
  7. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:16 PM PDT) I guess you could count Gandhi as South Asia/Mughal, and Ho as southeast Asia, they are different cultural regions
  8. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:16 PM PDT) Yes, examples are important when talking about something
  9. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:16 PM PDT) i thought we were supposed to talk about the regions, not the leaders?
  10. Cirilo R. (Jun 8, 2008 5:17 PM PDT) are we allowed to use bolivar
  11. Diego O. (Jun 8, 2008 5:17 PM PDT) prof. for the comprehensive essay.. i used examples of french rev in 1700s, taiping rebellion i 1800s, and world war 1 in 1900s. would this be ok to use??
  12. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:17 PM PDT) Globalization: maybe try to distinguish what's been going on since the 1970s from earlier globalizing developments
  13. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 5:17 PM PDT) In some cases change originates from leaders (Ghandi)
  14. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 5:17 PM PDT) that was my thinking
  15. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:17 PM PDT) Regions/leaders: well, those leaders led movements
  16. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:18 PM PDT) Yes, French rev, Taiping reb & WW1 would be fine
  17. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:18 PM PDT) i agree i was just clarifying on what im supposed to do, I was going to write about china, africa and india
  18. Christina Wiesendanger (Jun 8, 2008 5:19 PM PDT) Can counter-arguments be applied to all of the essays? In some cases I'm having a hard time finding counter-arguments.
  19. Brian C. (Jun 8, 2008 5:19 PM PDT) for the comprehensive essay could i write about 1700: African/ Triangle Trade, 1800: Industrial Rev, and 1900: Indian Independence?
  20. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:19 PM PDT) Bolivar himself wouldn't be the movement, although in that century movements were more focused on elites than masses (or just beginning to be about masses)
  21. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:19 PM PDT) My TA said I couldnt use the Enlightenment (1700's) and Abolition of Slavery (1800's) because their regions interconnected....Is this far
  22. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:19 PM PDT) fair*
  23. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 5:20 PM PDT) professor for the comprehensive essay what about how economics influenced the slave trade, industrial rev, and decolonization in the 17, 18, and 1900s respectively
  24. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:20 PM PDT) Maybe not counterarguments, but how about counterexamples, things that don't fit into the standard mold of theory
  25. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:21 PM PDT) Enlightenment and abolition: I'd go by what my TA said, although I think you can take things that contributed to abolition that had nothing to do with the enlightenment, and did not originate in Europe (like African culture)
  26. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:22 PM PDT) professor is the henequen exportation an example of export oriented development
  27. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:22 PM PDT) can you possibly define/ give a description of a world historical development?
  28. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 5:23 PM PDT) and what is the ID white wolf referring to?
  29. Brian C. (Jun 8, 2008 5:23 PM PDT) white wolf is in the book
  30. Brian C. (Jun 8, 2008 5:23 PM PDT) in the index
  31. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:23 PM PDT) Brian, triangle tr., indust rev. & decol would be ok, but don't use industrialization of Europe, if triangle trade is for capital accumulation for Europe
  32. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:24 PM PDT) Yes, henequen haciendas are an example of export-oriented dev.
  33. Alexandra G. (Jun 8, 2008 5:24 PM PDT) What is primacy of domestic policy? All I know is that it was an economic cause of the great war?
  34. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:24 PM PDT) I think primacy of domestic policy is keeping your citizens at home happy --even if it means going to war??
  35. Brian C. (Jun 8, 2008 5:24 PM PDT) Prof, can i use Triangle Trade for Africa and talk about the effects it had on the African Population (i.e sex ratio's, Queen Nzinga) and then do indus. rev for Europe?
  36. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:25 PM PDT) A world historical development is a long-term development that affected multiple regions of the globe
  37. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:25 PM PDT) grassroots movement, allowed for the Communists to learn that the passivity and vulnerability of the peasants were illusions matt
  38. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:25 PM PDT) oh it was in China
  39. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 5:25 PM PDT) For the comprehensive: French Revolution, Meiji restoration, India's Independence. Would these work together?
  40. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:25 PM PDT) Yes, White Wolf is in the textbook
  41. Jasmine H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:25 PM PDT) white wolf is the myth of a chinese "robin hood" like leader to get rid of injustices in the chinese republic around 1913-14 i think
  42. Cirilo R. (Jun 8, 2008 5:25 PM PDT) Out of curiosity are we allowed to use French Revolution and WW1 even though they are from the same place???
  43. Hart T. (Jun 8, 2008 5:26 PM PDT) Haitian rev, Meiji restoration, USSR dissolution. Would these be fine for the compreh?
  44. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:26 PM PDT) Note that China is more about peasants than industrial workers
  45. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:26 PM PDT) at that time
  46. Brenda T. (Jun 8, 2008 5:26 PM PDT) THE WHITE WOLF pg846
  47. Kimberly G. (Jun 8, 2008 5:26 PM PDT) I don't know how to answer Oceania
  48. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:27 PM PDT) Yes, Haiti, Meiji rest. and USSR end are fine
  49. Brian C. (Jun 8, 2008 5:27 PM PDT) do the students that care enough about their grade and have the ambition and determination to come onto this chat to further their knowledge about world history, get any kinds of hints as to which Id's, essays you will choose?
  50. Elliott R. (Jun 8, 2008 5:27 PM PDT) Can the South Atlantic slave trade be used as an event from the 1700s even though it went into the 1800s?
  51. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 5:27 PM PDT) or extra credit :)
  52. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:28 PM PDT) In 1899, is South Africa (Transvall, Orange St. Republics) considered colonized?
  53. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:28 PM PDT) No, French Rev. and WW1 would not be ok for post-midterm 1 nor for the comp question
  54. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:28 PM PDT) together, that is
  55. Cirilo R. (Jun 8, 2008 5:28 PM PDT) no the cummulative question
  56. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:28 PM PDT) Yes, south Africa was doubly colonized at that time
  57. Tanya Jimenez (Jun 8, 2008 5:28 PM PDT) so the events have to have begun and ended during the same time period?
  58. Tanya Jimenez (Jun 8, 2008 5:28 PM PDT) *same century
  59. Alexandra G. (Jun 8, 2008 5:29 PM PDT) I am having a hard time finding an example for 1700s. I am using WWI and abolution of slavery but I can't find another one for 1700s...
  60. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:29 PM PDT) S. Atlantic slave trade: yes, if you are focusing on features typical of the earlier century (that are different for whatever you select for the later one)
  61. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:29 PM PDT) 1700- Enlightenment!
  62. Hong N. (Jun 8, 2008 5:29 PM PDT) which region would world war II fall under? can we use it as "Asia'
  63. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 5:29 PM PDT) Again prof, for the comprehensive I can do French Revolution, Meiji Restoration, and India's independence correct?
  64. Alexandra G. (Jun 8, 2008 5:29 PM PDT) What is the primacy of domestic policy???
  65. Hong N. (Jun 8, 2008 5:30 PM PDT) can we use world war II for our comprehension question?
  66. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:30 PM PDT) Same century question: no, they don't have to have been completed in one century, but you have to choose features that are typical of one century or the other in which it happened
  67. Lindsay G. (Jun 8, 2008 5:30 PM PDT) I'm really confused about what we are supposed to discuss with Oceania?
  68. Lindsay G. (Jun 8, 2008 5:30 PM PDT) * for the id
  69. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:30 PM PDT) Industrialization in the 1700s was different (just beginning) compared to the 1800s, so different factors played a role, depending on which you pick
  70. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:31 PM PDT) im confused as well about oceania
  71. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:31 PM PDT) French Rev, Meiji rest & Indian indep are fine
  72. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:31 PM PDT) why wouldn't they be?
  73. Kimberly G. (Jun 8, 2008 5:31 PM PDT) im confused about oceania too
  74. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 5:31 PM PDT) good question
  75. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:31 PM PDT) We discussed Oceania in the chat before the midterm, and students had good responses
  76. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:32 PM PDT) For those who saw Walkabout as the extra credit film, it might be an easy one
  77. Alexandra G. (Jun 8, 2008 5:32 PM PDT) what is the primacy of domestic policy?
  78. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:32 PM PDT) so you want the same answer we would have given for the midterm oceania id
  79. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:32 PM PDT) yeah but can it be information about oceania before the midterm or information about it after?
  80. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:32 PM PDT) thats what im trying to figure out
  81. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:32 PM PDT) Primacy domestic policy: like going to war against a foreign country to distract from a bad situation at home (sound familiar?)
  82. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:33 PM PDT) Oceania: not necessarily, but that answer would suffice
  83. Cirilo R. (Jun 8, 2008 5:33 PM PDT) you said we could use WWI and French Revolution for cummulative earlier
  84. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:33 PM PDT) Oceania is still a stepchild of world history courses, doesn't really have a place
  85. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:34 PM PDT) although even in Western Civ it did play a crucial role in the Pacific theater of WW2
  86. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:34 PM PDT) What would you advise one to study about the South Atlantic Slave Trade in the 1800's
  87. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:35 PM PDT) But I'm thinking more about the indigenous cultures, although you could do the ID without focusing on them (still: worthy of mention, even as an outlier)
  88. Elliott R. (Jun 8, 2008 5:36 PM PDT) i'm a little confused, earlier you said that French Rev, Taiping Rebellion, and WWI would be fine for the cumulative question, but then you said that we couldn't use both the French Rev. and WWI on the cumulative question. which is correct?
  89. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:36 PM PDT) thanks
  90. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:36 PM PDT) South Atlantic Slave trade: study Anil's lecture--what was different than the triangle trade, how it explains Brazil's "trajectory" in certain respects
  91. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:37 PM PDT) Sorry about that: French Rev. & WW1 would NOT be ok together, my bad
  92. Elliott R. (Jun 8, 2008 5:37 PM PDT) ok thanks for clarifying
  93. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:37 PM PDT) would french rev., imperialism and the great depression be okay?
  94. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:38 PM PDT) Well, unless you are making the argument that WW1 was a world conflict and found something sufficient in a non-European theater to talk about (like India or Ho Chi Minh maybe, but I think that's a bit of a stretch)
  95. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 5:38 PM PDT) i havent really found much on the balfour declaration other than what it is, and is the significance really just that it set up a conflict in palestine?
  96. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:38 PM PDT) can you give an example of an event that was caused by wwI or wwII for question 2
  97. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 5:38 PM PDT) anything else specifically about it?
  98. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:38 PM PDT) what if you are talking about WWII and the affect it had on global powers and how the United States emerged as a world leader???
  99. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:39 PM PDT) Again, Fr. Rev., Imp & Great Depr. are all usually focused on Europe, although you could do Japanese imperialism, and the Depression could focus on the Americas ...
  100. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:39 PM PDT) balfour: maybe that it allowed for legitimacy by a prominent nation such as Britain?
  101. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:39 PM PDT) of the creation of Palestine as a nation
  102. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:39 PM PDT) Balfour: you're getting there ...
  103. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:40 PM PDT) that would be good for question 2, but is that what prof is looking for
  104. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 5:40 PM PDT) jessica do you mean israel?
  105. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:40 PM PDT) Haley, WW2 in what context--the comprehensive question? yes, you could do that I think
  106. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 5:40 PM PDT) and im just talking about for the ID
  107. Diego O. (Jun 8, 2008 5:40 PM PDT) prof. you told me earlier that french rev, taiping rebellion, and ww1 would be OK.. i noticed that u told another student that it would not be OK??
  108. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:41 PM PDT) even if you used the french revolution as well though???
  109. Julieana M. (Jun 8, 2008 5:41 PM PDT) can you you explain how WW1 was a Great War not World War?
  110. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:41 PM PDT) no it was the British favoring the establishment of Palestine as a national home of the Jewish people
  111. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:41 PM PDT) Events/developments caused by either World War: that should be pretty easy, I think?
  112. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 5:41 PM PDT) Because it was a European War essentially Julieana
  113. Diego O. (Jun 8, 2008 5:41 PM PDT) prof. i asked you earlier if i could use french rev, taiping rebellion, and ww1 for comprehensive essay and you said it was OK.. i noticed you told another student it is not OK??
  114. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:42 PM PDT) can you give an example of an event?
  115. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:42 PM PDT) The cause for WWII were out of the harsh provisions given to Germany in the Treaty of Versailles. Anything in particular? Land concession? Military being De-armed? Payments?
  116. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:42 PM PDT) Marcuse can you clear up Balfour Dec ID? the significance of it that is
  117. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:43 PM PDT) Great War not WW: I argued that it was really all about Europe, even if imperialist powers did draw lots of troops from their colonies; Prof. Humphries said Middle East (& Ottoman) was a major theater, and that's not European--people can differ on that one
  118. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:43 PM PDT) I also said its ORIGINS were primarily European, consequences global ...
  119. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:43 PM PDT) that i understand, the causes. what i dont understand is how it caused later events
  120. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:44 PM PDT) Jessica, Prof. Humphries played down the significance of Balfour in explaining why it was written when it was, although later it became a huge justification -- for what?
  121. Christina Wiesendanger (Jun 8, 2008 5:44 PM PDT) You mentioned we could talk about WWI if we discussed the U.S. as an emerging world power. However, can we still talk about this even if the French Revolution was one of our previous examples??
  122. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:45 PM PDT) Matt can you answer his question?
  123. Cirilo R. (Jun 8, 2008 5:45 PM PDT) are you going to give us apartheid, globalization, and export-oriented development like you said in lecture?
  124. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:47 PM PDT) Well, if you focus on how, for example, the US became the world's banker post-WW1, then that would be one world region, so long as you did not talk about the Fr. Rev's effects on the Americas (which were substantial--think Haiti)--it's a bit risky to have so much overlapping in that discussion, but you could use it to your advantage, too
  125. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:48 PM PDT) i don't remember professor saying in lecture what IDs he was going to give us?
  126. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 5:48 PM PDT) Neither did I?
  127. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:48 PM PDT) Cirilo, I'm not sure what you mean--what did I promise?
  128. Kimberly G. (Jun 8, 2008 5:48 PM PDT) I thought he just meant those were the IDs that were going to appear on the study guide.
  129. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:49 PM PDT) In the 1900's is Vietnam considered colonized (by the French)
  130. Johnathan Abrams (Jun 8, 2008 5:49 PM PDT) he didn't.. he simply explained that three of them might not make sense yet because he hadn't lectured on them
  131. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:49 PM PDT) Yes, Kimberly's right--I said that to clue you in that you should be thinking about an ID type answer since those 3 would be among the selection on the study guide, not necessarily on the final itself
  132. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:50 PM PDT) professor can you give me an example of a 3rd and 4th world?
  133. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:50 PM PDT) Yes, Vietnam/Siam was "colonized" by 1900
  134. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:50 PM PDT) as in specific countries
  135. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:51 PM PDT) 3rd & 4th: there are two different definitions: the "East-West" of the Cold War, and the "North-South" since the 1970s
  136. Julieana M. (Jun 8, 2008 5:51 PM PDT) For the Id: export-oriented development where could i find information on it ??
  137. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:52 PM PDT) The 3rd is different depending, and the fourth as well: there is a slide in L20 that names specific examples of these
  138. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 5:52 PM PDT) The lecture from Prof Soto Laveage
  139. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 5:53 PM PDT) Laveaga*
  140. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:53 PM PDT) i have the notes, like laos, haiti and etc but the text doesn't explain how they are 4th world
  141. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:54 PM PDT) Export-oriented: Prof. Soto Laveaga and Nicole's lectures both talked about it, the textbook is less explicit, but chaps 20 & 21 (e.g. the World Bank stuff in the latter) are relevant too
  142. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:54 PM PDT) which would be helpful for the paper, the lecture only says they are due to them being the poorest but more detail would be helpful
  143. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:55 PM PDT) we talked about export oriented earlier in the chat before professor came
  144. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:56 PM PDT) Fourth World: I'm just looking, and Wikipedia has examples for the "stateless" definition, but not the economic one
  145. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:56 PM PDT) wait so we can use examples from each of the worlds, but they can be in separate definitions of the "worlds"
  146. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 5:57 PM PDT) why is everyone concerned about the fourth world if the question doesnt even ask us to mention it?????
  147. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:57 PM PDT) Yes, poorest as in they don't even have the resources to be relevant for global extraction
  148. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:57 PM PDT) well in the paper could i use the u.s. as first, soviet as 2nd, africa as 3rd and the stateless ex for 4th?
  149. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:58 PM PDT) because it does ask you to define all the definitions of the world in the lecture and not on the final review\
  150. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:58 PM PDT) because we need 4 example and i thought using the 4th world would be perfect
  151. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:58 PM PDT) Why concern about 4th world: I guess *I* had it in the back of my mind as a possible example for post-midterm no. 3, in asking for 4 examples--you could say there are countries/regions/peoples outside of the "three" ...
  152. Jessica D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:59 PM PDT) it says in lecture that we need to define/describe each category of the three worlds
  153. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 5:59 PM PDT) that don't fit, and why the "WCiv" definition of the Three might be irrelevant for some things
  154. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 5:59 PM PDT) for my 4th example i could say there are people and regions outside of the 3 and i wouldn't need a specific region?
  155. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 6:00 PM PDT) Natalie, yes to your first question, but again, giving examples is always a good idea, so DO name a specific region/example
  156. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 6:00 PM PDT) Brandt are you studying later tonight???
  157. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 6:01 PM PDT) (By the way, "Africa as Third"--Africa is NOT a country, but LOTS of them!)
  158. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 6:01 PM PDT) Yeah, you want to study? Im going to the lib in a bit I think
  159. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 6:01 PM PDT) i am aware of that but the text gave it an ex as the continent as a third
  160. Jasmine L. (Jun 8, 2008 6:02 PM PDT) what did you guys think was the significance of white wolf? like what theme did you connect it to?
  161. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 6:02 PM PDT) its so crowded christina and i wanted to brainstorm essay topics
  162. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 6:03 PM PDT) Natalie, yes, the textbook did, but my lecture was a critique that in this case the textbook over-relies on the concept, and has a poor definition of it, that doesn't distinguish enough
  163. Julieana M. (Jun 8, 2008 6:03 PM PDT) So for export-oriented development would it just be in Latin America in the 20th century and could talk about NAFTA and different types of exports?
  164. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 6:03 PM PDT) Ok....you want to study somewhere?
  165. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 6:03 PM PDT) Ok....you want to study somewhere?
  166. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 6:04 PM PDT) Ok....you want to study somewhere?
  167. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 6:04 PM PDT) we are at the UCEN:)
  168. Jasmine H. (Jun 8, 2008 6:04 PM PDT) anybody (prof. included!) have ideas on what main points we should focus on for MUGHAL empire?
  169. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 6:04 PM PDT) Export-oriented development is not limited to Latin America, but in the course we focused on it there. And it started long before NAFTA, but mentioning Nafta's role in it would be excellent
  170. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 6:04 PM PDT) i didn't find the lecture to distinguish enough the definitions of 3rd and 4th worlds which is why i asked for examples
  171. Haley H. (Jun 8, 2008 6:05 PM PDT) i focused on the pre-midterm info., jasmine
  172. Jasmine H. (Jun 8, 2008 6:05 PM PDT) thanx haley, ill review :/
  173. Brandt H. (Jun 8, 2008 6:06 PM PDT) haley im trying to chat with you on facebook
  174. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 6:07 PM PDT) Mughal: of all of the "empires" it is one of the most complex; "India" is extremely diverse and even at the M.E's peak, how much was really under control? Compare to lumping all of "Africa" together--maybe useful for some things, not for others
  175. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 6:07 PM PDT) So Natalie, are you clearer on 3rd vs. 4th now?
  176. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 6:09 PM PDT) In the Cold War 3rd World, "everything else" includes a broad range of types of relationships to the first 2 "worlds"
  177. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 6:09 PM PDT) i think i just found some examples on wikipedia
  178. Lindsay G. (Jun 8, 2008 6:11 PM PDT) for the first post-midterm essay question, could I use cuba as an example to resisting US imperialist control?
  179. Cirilo R. (Jun 8, 2008 6:11 PM PDT) are we supposed to use the first version of the first, second, third, and fourth world
  180. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 6:11 PM PDT) Yes, Cuba is an excellent example
  181. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 6:12 PM PDT) Cirilo, you can use either definition--it would be good/necessary to explain the choice you are making and perhaps why
  182. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 6:12 PM PDT) malawi for 4th world?
  183. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 6:12 PM PDT) I've got to go now--I'll be back at 8.

June 8, 2008, 6pm-2am (prof there ca. 9:20-11pm) (back to top)

  • 9. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 6:30 PM PDT) does someone wanna explain why wwI happened
  • 10. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 6:32 PM PDT) The context which helps explain the war was increasing economic and military competition between Britain and Germany. Germany's industrial economy was fast overtaking Britain's, but the German economy lacked a major empire to back up its home economy. The economic race between the two powers led to military competition, in particular the building of numerous "Dreadnoughts" -powerful military ships. The immediate cause of the war was the June 28, 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb citizen of Austria-Hungary and member of the B. Hand. The retaliation by Austria-Hungary against the Kingdom of Serbia activated a series of alliances that set off a chain reaction of war declarations. Within a month, much of Europe was in a state of open warfare.
  • 11. Brian C. (Jun 8, 2008 6:33 PM PDT) franz ferinand was an austrian killed by a serb. serbia is allied with russia who is allied with france and britain. after FF was killed, Russia moved troops up to the border, Austria (whose allies with italy and germany), responded and declared war
  • 12. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 6:33 PM PDT) the condensed (and un-scholarly as you know) version can be found on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I second and third paragraphs
  • 13. Brian C. (Jun 8, 2008 6:33 PM PDT) so nationalism, alliances caused it
  • 14. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 6:34 PM PDT) the growing economics of germany as well as germany's developing of a navy contributed as well
  • 15. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 6:34 PM PDT) so helpful, thanks to both brians
  • 16. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 6:34 PM PDT) haha

  • 21. Brian C. (Jun 8, 2008 6:35 PM PDT) there better be some extra credit
  • 22. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 6:35 PM PDT) franz ferdinand just kicked it off, but tensions had been growing.
  • 23. Brian C. (Jun 8, 2008 6:35 PM PDT) this is a lot harder than the midterm
  • 24. Ashley E. (Jun 8, 2008 6:36 PM PDT) for the comprehensive essay, would the second sino-jap. war count as an event for the 1900's? the thing is.....it's origins are from the 19th cent....?
  • 25. Ashley E. (Jun 8, 2008 6:36 PM PDT) for the comprehensive essay, would the second sino-jap. war count as an event for the 1900's? the thing is.....it's origins are from the 19th cent....?

  • 33. Jasmine H. (Jun 8, 2008 6:40 PM PDT) did you just have to turn in a card for the movies or write a paper too? i def missed the explanation of how extra credit works
  • 34. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 6:41 PM PDT) considering the sino-japanese war happened in 1894-1895, it may be a questionable 1900 event.
  • 35. Natalie D. (Jun 8, 2008 6:41 PM PDT) oh 4% my bad, ya just a card with a sentence summary

  • 126. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 9:54 PM PDT) So, it looks like they have rebooted Sakai. sorry, I could not get on at 8, but will be here for a half hour or so now.
  • 127. Kimberly G. (Jun 8, 2008 9:57 PM PDT) So are Vietnam, India, and China ok for #1?
  • 128. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 9:57 PM PDT) prof what would you say are the defining characteristics of the communist world
  • 129. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 9:58 PM PDT) I'm going back to 8:15. Lindsay on compreshensive--slave trade, haitian rev & collapse of Soviet Union--I'd say slave trade & Haiti are pretty closely linked, better to choose something more different.
  • 130. Hart T. (Jun 8, 2008 9:58 PM PDT) first explain why the country can be considered a part of that "world." -> i'm not sure how i can write about this: "US is first world cause it is capitalist", what exactly are you expecting from this question? I feel like i don't know how to answer this part
  • 131. Natalie H. (Jun 8, 2008 9:58 PM PDT) What do you mean by "goals" for the third essay?
  • 132. Diego O. (Jun 8, 2008 9:58 PM PDT) the significance of perestroika?? the idea of a new plan to restore human dignity
  • 133. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 9:59 PM PDT) Vietnam and China are distinct enough, I guess, since their colonizations were very different and the traditions on which they drew to resist.
  • 134. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 9:59 PM PDT) for the part of essay #3 where we are supposed to describe the defining characterists
  • 135. Gabriela D. (Jun 8, 2008 9:59 PM PDT) is mexico ok for one of the answers to #1.
  • 136. Natalie H. (Jun 8, 2008 9:59 PM PDT) What do you mean by "goals" for the third essay?
  • 137. Dana R. (Jun 8, 2008 10:01 PM PDT) so can we use india in addition to those two?
  • 138. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:02 PM PDT) Mexico would be fine for Q1, could be for 1800s or 1900s, depending on which liberation from whom
  • 139. Gabriela D. (Jun 8, 2008 10:02 PM PDT) can we use french rev, boxer rebellion, and ww2 for the comprehensive essay?
  • 140. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:03 PM PDT) Dana, India in addition to Mexico and China? Yes
  • 141. Kimberly G. (Jun 8, 2008 10:04 PM PDT) how about South Africa, Haiti, and Vietnam?
  • 142. Lindsay G. (Jun 8, 2008 10:04 PM PDT) for the comprehensive essay could I do Haitian revolution (1700), Slave trade (1800) and creation and collapse of the USSR (1900)
  • 143. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:05 PM PDT) French rev and WW2--hmmm--I guess so, since WW2 was not limited to Europe (but you then must discuss consequences for Pacific theater, not limited to Europe)
  • 144. Natalie H. (Jun 8, 2008 10:05 PM PDT) What do you mean by "goals" for the third essay?
  • 145. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:05 PM PDT) S. Africa, Haiti & Vietnam would be fine.
  • 146. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:06 PM PDT) By the way, while I couldn't get onto Sakai, I responded to a student comment that Q3 was far harder than the others, and a little discussion developed that I posted in the course website announcements:
  • 147. Natalie H. (Jun 8, 2008 10:06 PM PDT) What do you mean by "goals' for the third essay?
  • 148. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:07 PM PDT) Lindsay, I think Haiti and slave trade are too closely linked. It would be easier to choose something more different
  • 149. Lindsay G. (Jun 8, 2008 10:08 PM PDT) okay, thanks
  • 150. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:08 PM PDT) Goals: I can think of 2 main things that the "first world" wanted to have "3rd w." allies for, something military and something economic.
  • 151. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:09 PM PDT) 2nd world: what did Stalin (for example) fear would happen in Europe? 3rd: what goals did Ho Chi Minh, Nasser, C., Allende etc etc have for their countries?
  • 152. Brenda T. (Jun 8, 2008 10:09 PM PDT) for the first essay i was thinking cuba, india, and china. are the good ok
  • 153. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:11 PM PDT) Brenda, Cuba, India, China would be fine; you might want to specify in India and China which resistances you mean, or several together
  • 154. Natalie H. (Jun 8, 2008 10:12 PM PDT) What would be an example of a factor that would have played an important role in the american rev but did not? (comprehensive question)
  • 155. Natalie H. (Jun 8, 2008 10:12 PM PDT) What would be an example of a factor that would have played an important role in the american rev but did not? (comprehensive question)
  • 156. Diego O. (Jun 8, 2008 10:14 PM PDT) for the comprehensive essay.. when you say consider what role the world historical and cultural contexts played? what are you specifically looking for?
  • 157. Natalie H. (Jun 8, 2008 10:14 PM PDT) What would be an example of a factor that would have played an important role in the american rev but did not? (comprehensive question)
  • 158. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:15 PM PDT) Natalie, I don't want to give answers, but from the EIEIOC I think of 2 that were less important in the American rev--where colonies & British were similar is one, and the other, well, it played a role in the trigger (eg. Tea Party), but no so much in the outcome.
  • 159. Natalie H. (Jun 8, 2008 10:15 PM PDT) what would be an example of a factor that could have played an important role in the amercian revolution but did not? (comprehensive essay)
  • 160. Natalie H. (Jun 8, 2008 10:15 PM PDT) what would be an example of a factor that could have played an important role in the amercian revolution but did not? (comprehensive essay)
  • 161. Natalie H. (Jun 8, 2008 10:16 PM PDT) what would be an example of a factor that could have played an important role in the amercian revolution but did not? (comprehensive essay)
  • 162. Kimberly G. (Jun 8, 2008 10:17 PM PDT) Are Vietnam and India ok for question one? I'm still thinking of ideas
  • 163. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:18 PM PDT) Mathew's question earlier on defining characteristics of 2nd world (political definition): well, they were communist--but you should specify what that meant. Would Marx have seen them as the realization of his ideas? See textbook, um 702-4, what happens to "the state" in his model?
  • 164. Lindsay G. (Jun 8, 2008 10:18 PM PDT) for the comprehension question, are the enlightenment (1700) and american expansion (1800) too similar because they are both part of the west?
  • 165. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:20 PM PDT) Yes, Vietnam and India are fine--India has several examples, depending on which century: 710-14 in textbook, Gandhi
  • 166. Natalie H. (Jun 8, 2008 10:20 PM PDT) i guess i just dont understand what you;re looking for. the way i see it, if it wasnt an important role then how are we supposed to know it?
  • 167. Lindsay G. (Jun 8, 2008 10:20 PM PDT) nevermind, i think i'm going to do enlightenment, meiji restoration and ussr
  • 168. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:24 PM PDT) Enlightenment and US expansion for comprehensive--well, it could go both ways: Americas and Europe are different cultural regions, but they are the same, too (WCiv...). Also, Enlightenment was the basis for the "civilizing mission," but also of respect for indigenous cultures (depending on how people interpreted it--kind of like the bible as the basis for just about any side of any argument). So you can take them as separate, as long as you use the "different" aspects.
  • 169. Brenda T. (Jun 8, 2008 10:26 PM PDT) for the comprehensive essay is the French revolution -1700, the revolutions in south America revolutions with bolivar-1800, and the Mexican revolution-1900 a good choice
  • 170. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 10:27 PM PDT) your last 2 are in the same world region
  • 171. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:27 PM PDT) Lindsay, you mean collapse of USSR? To be clear that it is a different "region of the globe," maybe call it the end of the Cold War? I can't discuss every possibility with the TAs, and I don't know how some of them might feel (both Enl. & USSR in Europe).
  • 172. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 10:27 PM PDT) professor marcuse, so for question 3 would you consider the US obviously for the capitalist world, china and USSR for the communist, and perhaps india as a country that was one on the fence deciding between the two worlds
  • 173. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 10:27 PM PDT) or was india obviously going with capitalism because of its strong ties with britain
  • 174. Hart T. (Jun 8, 2008 10:29 PM PDT) what does it mean to "not brook assaults" on pg 887?
  • 175. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:29 PM PDT) Brenda, Kylie's right: Bolivar and Mexico, even Zapata/Villa (not only Morelos/Iturbide) are same region
  • 176. Brenda T. (Jun 8, 2008 10:30 PM PDT) ok
  • 177. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:32 PM PDT) Matthew, India is a good example of a country that doesn't fit neatly into the "3 worlds," and as such you can use it as an example that gives you plenty to talk about. Since partition til the 1980s India went rather socialist (see textbook p. 932)
  • 178. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:34 PM PDT) "not brook" --I'm looking for the exact passage and don't see it, but it means: would not stand for
  • 179. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:35 PM PDT) oh, yeah, I see it at the bottom of the page: we are full into the goals of the first world!
  • 180. Brenda T. (Jun 8, 2008 10:35 PM PDT) what about the opium war during 1800's for the comprehensive essay?
  • 181. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:37 PM PDT) Opium war--maybe my wording of the comprehensive question is confusing--"that event" means "world-historical development". So Opium war would not be such a big kind of thing.
  • 182. Natalie H. (Jun 8, 2008 10:40 PM PDT) Out of curiosity, did you take into account the e-mail sent by a fellow student saying that Essay 3 was by far the hardest?
  • 183. Brenda T. (Jun 8, 2008 10:40 PM PDT) ok so is the taiping revolution is a better example?
  • 184. Matthew B. (Jun 8, 2008 10:40 PM PDT) thanks
  • 185. Gregory B. (Jun 8, 2008 10:41 PM PDT) Prof. In regard to the comprehensive question, would you recommend having a similiar thematic element. Such as alternative worldviews? Or would three broadly different events suffice?
  • 186. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:45 PM PDT) Natalie, click the "Profs 2c homepage" link on the left--I added that thread to the homepage announcements. Other students think it's the easiest: "I just saw the note on the class website about the third essay prompt and wanted to contribute my two cents: I think it's the clearest and easiest of the prompts! So it really should remain one of the essay possibilities. I know I'm hoping it's the one that comes up on the exam!"
  • 187. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 10:46 PM PDT) Do you pick the essay out at random?
  • 188. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 10:47 PM PDT) prof marcuse, would you consider israel/palestine a sort of fourth-world region post-balfour declaration?
  • 189. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:47 PM PDT) Brenda, the examples you have would be good for q.1, but not for the comprehensive question. The comp. looks for world-historical developments, BIG themes/developments that affect multiple regions of the globe. Taiping rebellion was just China.
  • 190. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:49 PM PDT) ok, Sakai (or my computer) has slowed to a crawl, and I have to deal with a Y. teen & a dirty kitchen, will check back in 30-40 minutes. Two more answers:
  • 191. Hart T. (Jun 8, 2008 10:50 PM PDT) what?
  • 192. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:50 PM PDT) No, I don't pick the essay out at random. I try to balance it with the IDs I've chosen, and I take feedback from the TAs and think which question/prompt will elicit the best answers.
  • 193. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 10:52 PM PDT) Im doing French Rev, Maiji Restor, and India Independence for comprehensive; I feel the question leaves a lot of room for interpretation so should I make connections such as; All of them had movements from the people opposing the existing power and specific leaders who brought new idea's to the table
  • 194. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:52 PM PDT) depending on which def. of 4th world, Israel would most certainly not fit in, although the pre-WW2 Jews might, and certainly the Palestinians would. But not using the economic def. of 4th world.
  • 195. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:54 PM PDT) Matthew, sounds good to me, but be sure to talk a bit more about who "the people" are, e.g. in Japan
  • 196. Harold Marcuse (Jun 8, 2008 10:54 PM PDT) I'll check back in a while.

Students chat alone until prof. checks in again briefly at 12:22 AM (170 posts)

  • 199. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 10:55 PM PDT) 1700s French Rev is a good one, I can't make up my mind for the 1800s and 1900s

  • 210. Rebecca EF. (Jun 8, 2008 11:02 PM PDT) im confused about the comprehensive essay-so we talk about what caused the historical event and then how that impacted the world?
  • 211. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:02 PM PDT) OH! Kristen's lecture about Japanese Imperialism?
  • 212. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:04 PM PDT) No prof. Roberts

  • 224. Peter C. (Jun 8, 2008 11:09 PM PDT) hey so what were your definitions for question 3 i dunno if i say if its communist capitalist and no affiliation as third or if i do industrialized, industrializing and poorest
  • 225. Peter C. (Jun 8, 2008 11:09 PM PDT) can some help and give me a quick answer im sure its been discuesed
  • 226. Rebecca EF. (Jun 8, 2008 11:10 PM PDT) is the French Revolution and the Cold war to similar for the comprehensive one even if I talk about the Cold War in relation to countries like Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan?
  • 227. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:11 PM PDT) Peter look at lecture #20 under homepage
  • 228. Peter C. (Jun 8, 2008 11:11 PM PDT) hey so what were your definitions for question 3 i dunno if i say if its communist capitalist and no affiliation as third or if i do industrialized, industrializing and poorest
  • 229. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:12 PM PDT) I was thinking about doing that to. I might have to change it. I am for sure doing French Rev for 1700s...1800s/1900s still blurry
  • 230. Rebecca EF. (Jun 8, 2008 11:12 PM PDT) its either i think you get to choose if you want to do it with ideologies of capitalism/communism or with industrialization levels
  • 231. Peter C. (Jun 8, 2008 11:12 PM PDT) oh really
  • 232. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:12 PM PDT) It's political definition vs. economic definition.
  • 233. Peter C. (Jun 8, 2008 11:13 PM PDT) oh ok great
  • 234. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:13 PM PDT) one or the other
  • 235. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 11:14 PM PDT) so we get to choose our definition of 4th world?
  • 236. Peter C. (Jun 8, 2008 11:14 PM PDT) I think it saysfor four examples, at least one from each "world," first explain why the country can be considered a part of that "world.
  • 237. Peter C. (Jun 8, 2008 11:15 PM PDT) at least one from each world
  • 238. Peter C. (Jun 8, 2008 11:15 PM PDT) so im guessing u can do liek 2 from first world...1 from 2nd world and 1 from third
  • 239. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:15 PM PDT) correct
  • 240. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:16 PM PDT) just dont fall into talking about industrialized/industrializing..
  • 241. Peter C. (Jun 8, 2008 11:16 PM PDT) ok thanks for telling me that i almost picked it...talkin about capitalism communism should be much easier huh
  • 242. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:17 PM PDT) Either one works, just dont talk about both within the same essay is what I meant.
  • 243. Rebecca EF. (Jun 8, 2008 11:18 PM PDT) what did you say for the meiji restoration?
  • 244. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:20 PM PDT) Still working on it but essentially its restoring the emporer; reverting back to traditional leadership
  • 245. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:25 PM PDT) My brain is fried, I can barely think anymore haha
  • 246. Rebecca EF. (Jun 8, 2008 11:26 PM PDT) same i couldnt be in the library anymore too much work.
  • 247. Julia DG. (Jun 8, 2008 11:27 PM PDT) dude, same here. i keep staring at the pages hoping that somehow i'll manage to remember something about anything. it's gotten pathetic. haha
  • 248. Gabriela D. (Jun 8, 2008 11:29 PM PDT) im done studying...if i put anymore info in my brain my brain is going to mix stuff up. just know the impt concepts i guess
  • 249. Rebecca EF. (Jun 8, 2008 11:32 PM PDT) for the meiji restoration did you say it was important in the context of world history because they became an imperial power by colonizing korea and stuff?
  • 250. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:34 PM PDT) um, haven't gotten that far, im working on that one last since I know the least
  • 251. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:35 PM PDT) By the end of the Maiji period (1911) they were up to par with Westerners. Thats the grounds of my argument I think
  • 252. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:36 PM PDT) Maiji modernized Japan.
  • 253. Rebecca EF. (Jun 8, 2008 11:36 PM PDT) how do you make a thesis for this prompt?
  • 254. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:36 PM PDT) My thesis is going to be pure b.s most likely
  • 255. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:37 PM PDT) Im assuming incorperate what all three cases have in common
  • 256. Rebecca EF. (Jun 8, 2008 11:40 PM PDT) yea i was going to try to do that im not quite sure what we are supposed to argue though...i mean ok talk about the causes of each event and then how it affected the world? so confused on this one
  • 257. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:41 PM PDT) Yeah I know, that's what I said to the prof. earlier. The question is really open-ended, a lot of room for interpretation
  • 258. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:42 PM PDT) Which can be good, but I prefer a more narrow question
  • 259. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:42 PM PDT) Does anyone know is Apartheid in South Africa can be used for 1900s
  • 260. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 11:44 PM PDT) haha yeah i'd say so....
  • 261. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:44 PM PDT) I mean can it be used for the comp essay question
  • 262. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:44 PM PDT) for the 1900s
  • 263. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:45 PM PDT) I guess so....
  • 264. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:46 PM PDT) yay
  • 265. Brenda T. (Jun 8, 2008 11:46 PM PDT) i hope he picks essay # 2
  • 266. Brenda T. (Jun 8, 2008 11:51 PM PDT) #3 is to complicate because he only discussed about it in once and we did not have time time to discussion about it
  • 267. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:51 PM PDT) luckily im a poli sci major and learned all about it already
  • 268. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:53 PM PDT) Lucky you.
  • 269. Brenda T. (Jun 8, 2008 11:54 PM PDT) what essay do you guys think he's going to pick?
  • 270. Rebecca EF. (Jun 8, 2008 11:54 PM PDT) 1 or 3
  • 271. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 11:55 PM PDT) the third one is not hard
  • 272. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 11:55 PM PDT) all you have to do is describe each world and talk about one region within each world
  • 273. Tilden R. (Jun 8, 2008 11:55 PM PDT) ill put money down says its the first one
  • 274. Kevin L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:55 PM PDT) what do u talk about in the thirdo ne
  • 275. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 11:55 PM PDT) and if its goals were met
  • 276. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 11:56 PM PDT) USA/USSR+China/Your Favorite 3rd World Country
  • 277. Kevin L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:56 PM PDT) i understand, but what kind of goals do they have?
  • 278. Tilden R. (Jun 8, 2008 11:57 PM PDT) the third one we learned about the last day of class so its semi-unfair if he puts in on there, the world war 1 and 2 is just obscure but the eieio is a fave. of his
  • 279. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 11:57 PM PDT) we learned about it.. it's fair game
  • 280. Matthew S. (Jun 8, 2008 11:57 PM PDT) The first essay makes most sense since it's asking about colonization which we've learned about throughout the entire quarter
  • 281. Brenda T. (Jun 8, 2008 11:57 PM PDT) the USA has capitalism, USSR has communism, and the third world
  • 282. Edward L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:57 PM PDT) What is the fourth example..
  • 283. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 11:57 PM PDT) capitalism/democracy, communism/socialism, third world has neither
  • 284. Tilden R. (Jun 8, 2008 11:57 PM PDT) did anybody apply the eieio model to essay number two?
  • 285. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 11:57 PM PDT) yeah.
  • 286. Edward L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:58 PM PDT) For Four examples..
  • 287. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 11:58 PM PDT) in response to edward*
  • 288. Edward L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:58 PM PDT) oh
  • 289. Rebecca EF. (Jun 8, 2008 11:58 PM PDT) so its ok to use US/USSR it seemed too obvious to me
  • 290. Brian D. (Jun 8, 2008 11:58 PM PDT) it doesnt say four worlds
  • 291. Edward L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:59 PM PDT) yeah I seriously think number 1 is on the test
  • 292. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:59 PM PDT) Eddie were you in my INT 20 class?
  • 293. Edward L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:59 PM PDT) who me?
  • 294. Brenda T. (Jun 8, 2008 11:59 PM PDT) that is the goal of the third world?
  • 295. Kylie L. (Jun 8, 2008 11:59 PM PDT) If not, you just have the same name of this Eddie L. person I know
  • 296. Rebecca EF. (Jun 9, 2008 12:00 AM PDT) i think that they just want thier independence since they used to be colonized and are trying to decide which direction to take theri country but im not positive
  • 297. Edward L. (Jun 9, 2008 12:00 AM PDT) hahhaa I get that a lot
  • 298. Edward L. (Jun 9, 2008 12:01 AM PDT) I think the third world wants to be left alone and return to their roots
  • 299. Gabriela D. (Jun 9, 2008 12:01 AM PDT) there goal was to find a different way than that from the 1st and 2nd world..obviously they havent achieved that
  • 300. Emily A. (Jun 9, 2008 12:01 AM PDT) the third world wants the democratic policies of the first world but wants the rapid econ development like the second world
  • 301. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 12:01 AM PDT) bingo
  • 302. Matthew S. (Jun 9, 2008 12:02 AM PDT) while not having to enter the struggle between the two superpowers
  • 303. Brenda T. (Jun 9, 2008 12:02 AM PDT) now i'm ok with essay 2&3

  • 313. Emily A. (Jun 9, 2008 12:03 AM PDT) vietnam would be a perfect example
  • 314. Edward L. (Jun 9, 2008 12:05 AM PDT) Any ideas about number one.. I have boxer rebellion and of course Africa but what is another one?
  • 315. Matthew S. (Jun 9, 2008 12:06 AM PDT) I think maybe talk about enlightenment brought by Gandhi
  • 316. Matthew S. (Jun 9, 2008 12:06 AM PDT) and how he started the peoples movement of opposition
  • 317. Edward L. (Jun 9, 2008 12:06 AM PDT) Well if I talk about boxer rebellion I cannot talk about Gandhi because the regions are the same...
  • 318. Peter C. (Jun 9, 2008 12:07 AM PDT) hey for any of you who r on
  • 319. Tilden R. (Jun 9, 2008 12:07 AM PDT) for the first one i'm using ghandi vs. britain

  • 326. Gabriela D. (Jun 9, 2008 12:08 AM PDT) for #1 i have mexico, india, and china

  • 339. Brenda T. (Jun 9, 2008 12:10 AM PDT) can you use mexico vs france
  • 340. Matthew S. (Jun 9, 2008 12:11 AM PDT) China was semi-colonized by Japan
  • 341. Luis C. (Jun 9, 2008 12:11 AM PDT) germany colonized it first then japan after ww1
  • 342. Tilden R. (Jun 9, 2008 12:12 AM PDT) wheres marcuse?

  • 354. Brenda T. (Jun 9, 2008 12:15 AM PDT) 1860
  • 355. Brenda T. (Jun 9, 2008 12:15 AM PDT) 1860s

  • 359. Brenda T. (Jun 9, 2008 12:20 AM PDT) how can u use china for essay #1?

  • 365. Emmarae M. (Jun 9, 2008 12:22 AM PDT) meiji restoration: http://compsoc.net/~gemini/simons/historyweb/meiji-resto.html
  • 366. Emmarae M. (Jun 9, 2008 12:22 AM PDT) meiji restoration: http://compsoc.net/~gemini/simons/historyweb/meiji-resto.html
  • 367. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 12:22 AM PDT) why not

  • 368. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:22 AM PDT) I'm just checking in one last time tonight, scanning what you've discussed. Two things: China and India are definitely different world regions; Vietnam and China really are not.
  • 369. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 12:22 AM PDT) india i mean
  • 370. Carson A. (Jun 9, 2008 12:22 AM PDT) what chapter is that ill just check the outlines and summaries online
  • 371. Rebecca EF. (Jun 9, 2008 12:22 AM PDT) for authoritarian rule
  • 372. Rebecca EF. (Jun 9, 2008 12:23 AM PDT) do you think its ok to talk jsut about Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini or do i need to include every authoritarian ruler?
  • 373. Emmarae M. (Jun 9, 2008 12:23 AM PDT) is chapter 17
  • 374. Kevin L. (Jun 9, 2008 12:23 AM PDT) can we discuss the third essay question? i'm still confused on what it means by goals of the three worlds.
  • 375. Carson A. (Jun 9, 2008 12:24 AM PDT) k thanks
  • 376. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 12:24 AM PDT) professor, although vietnam and china are not you could still use vietnam for your asian-region though, correct? like vietnam, latin america, and africa (senegal for example)
  • 377. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:24 AM PDT) And for III (comprehensive): it is not the same as II-1: the "world historical developments" are the same as "that event" later in the question. These are BIG developments, like industrialization, decolonization, much larger scale than the resistance attempts.
  • 378. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:24 AM PDT) Brian yes, that's fine
  • 379. Kylie L. (Jun 9, 2008 12:25 AM PDT) So 1900s Apartheid for III comp essay can't be used....
  • 380. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 12:25 AM PDT) decolonization is huuuuuge
  • 381. Carson A. (Jun 9, 2008 12:25 AM PDT) professor: for the comprehensive essay, is enlightenment, african imperialism, and the great depression reasonable things to use?
  • 382. Kylie L. (Jun 9, 2008 12:25 AM PDT) ?
  • 383. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:26 AM PDT) that's right, not apartheid for III, and decol is huge, but what about its causes? Are they the same or similar in most cases?
  • 384. Carson A. (Jun 9, 2008 12:26 AM PDT) or also is it possible for india to be used ?
  • 385. Brenda T. (Jun 9, 2008 12:27 AM PDT) can nationalism be use for the 1900's for the comprehensive essay
  • 386. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:28 AM PDT) Carson, I wouldn't limit imperialism just to Africa, but yes, those are ok. Prior to 1800 "world" scale might not be the whole world, at least not right away, and enlightenment does span multiple world regions, so it's ok.
  • 387. Kevin L. (Jun 9, 2008 12:28 AM PDT) professor, can u explain the goals of the three worlds?
  • 388. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:29 AM PDT) Carson, imperialism period, don't limit to any region. Are the causes the same for Asia, Africa, Latin America, India, ...?
  • 389. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 12:30 AM PDT) democracy/capitalism, socialism/communism, and "third world wants the democratic policies of the first world but wants the rapid econ development like the second world "
  • 390. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 12:30 AM PDT) as well as to be free from the first two dominating worlds
  • 391. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:30 AM PDT) Kevin, check this chat at 10:08pm above for the 3 worlds goals. Also a note about "brooking no assaults" on textbook p. 887, somewhere above
  • 392. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:31 AM PDT) Brenda, nationalism would be fine for III
  • 393. Hong N. (Jun 9, 2008 12:33 AM PDT) professor, would the abolition of the slave trade be considered africa?
  • 394. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:33 AM PDT) Brian, that was a comment above I think. It's ok, but the first world also had some fast industrializers, but authoritarian/command economies were more typical
  • 395. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 12:34 AM PDT) i suppose japan would be an example of that then
  • 396. Brenda T. (Jun 9, 2008 12:34 AM PDT) for essay # 3 or comprehensive essay
  • 397. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:34 AM PDT) Hong, abolition had an effect on Africa, but I'd say its causes lay in the Americas and Europe
  • 398. Evan Z. (Jun 9, 2008 12:37 AM PDT) for the comprehensive essay, would nonviolent resistance in India or Nationalism in China be a stronger argument?
  • 399. Hong N. (Jun 9, 2008 12:37 AM PDT) i talked about the industrial revolution for the 1700s, would it be okay for me to talk about the abolition of slavery in the 1800s?
  • 400. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:37 AM PDT) For comprehensive--for II- 3 we're in the 20th century, and although there is still plenty of slavery today (remember Anil & iAbolish: more slaves today than ever before, just proportionately less). Still, I think it's ok to say abolition was a world-historical development.
  • 401. Tilden R. (Jun 9, 2008 12:38 AM PDT) Professor, for the comprehensive essay would the french revolution, Meiji restoration, and indian independence suffice?
  • 402. Evan Z. (Jun 9, 2008 12:40 AM PDT) Professor, for the comprehensive essay would European Enlightenment, American Industrialization, and indian independence be a viable argument?
  • 403. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:40 AM PDT) Oops, I'm getting tired, better end. What I said at 12:28--imperialism not limited to continent for III--was wrong. Yes, develop it on one example.
  • 404. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:41 AM PDT) Hong, although industrialization had roots in 1700s, the "revolution" (fast) part wasn't until the 1800s.
  • 405. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:42 AM PDT) Tilden, that sounds fine. I'm signing off before I confuse you or myself any more. Wanted to say one more thing about thesis for III.
  • 406. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 12:44 AM PDT) prof i know you're leaving but maybe you can just clarify this really fast.. is a revolution, or.. restoration, like the meiji restoration too small of a world-historical development? does it need to be more global in scale?
  • 407. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 12:45 AM PDT) oh well i guess that is more global as it opens up japan to western trade and brings it to develop rapidly..
  • 408. Hong N. (Jun 9, 2008 12:46 AM PDT) hey brian, can you describe more abou tit
  • 409. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:46 AM PDT) Thesis for III might say something about how some causal factors were common across all centuries, while others were not. Or how some were less important early on, then more so later (or vice-versa). Or how some were crucial to outcome, while others merely played enabling role.
  • 410. Brenda T. (Jun 9, 2008 12:46 AM PDT) Evan, I have the same ones
  • 411. Kylie L. (Jun 9, 2008 12:46 AM PDT) Good night Prof. See you tomorrow.
  • 412. Evan Z. (Jun 9, 2008 12:47 AM PDT) ok sweet. i was pretty sure they work but just wanted a second opinion
  • 413. Brenda T. (Jun 9, 2008 12:48 AM PDT) what do you think about Indian independence?
  • 414. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:48 AM PDT) Brian, I think you've pointed out a weakness in III. I want to think about this when I'm not so tired--since these are world-historical developments, they by definition transcend world regions, so it is not appropriate to say: pick one from each region. It made sense to me before, but not right now.
  • 415. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 12:49 AM PDT) Good night.

  • 479. Evan Z. (Jun 9, 2008 1:20 AM PDT) i tried pushing it to it is a symbol of India's economic globalization because its a major port...but that might be a stretch

  • 497. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 1:29 AM PDT) yeah, 3 is kind of difficult.. i could do it but wouldn't be my best
  • 498. Evan Z. (Jun 9, 2008 1:31 AM PDT) i think 2 is the easiest so i hope it is 2 but i think because 3 opens up more paradigms and global connections
  • 499. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 1:31 AM PDT) for global impact on WWI, what would you guys say for WWI.. all i can think of is importation of soldiers from world colonies
  • 500. Chloe L. (Jun 9, 2008 1:32 AM PDT) are we supposed to pick one aspect of the three worlds like either write about the political worlds or the economic or both?
  • 501. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 1:32 AM PDT) pick your favorite.
  • 502. Evan Z. (Jun 9, 2008 1:32 AM PDT) the break up of the ottoman empire into new Arab countries is big, alliance ties became increasingly important in global interactions
  • 503. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 1:33 AM PDT) yeah dude here's the question (sarcasm): pick four regions from three worlds and then write about each world in terms of their political goals. then write about each of the four regions in terms of their economical goals. describe how each of the four regions can be considered apart of its respective world. finally, was each region successful in achieving its goals? why or why not?
  • 504. Evan Z. (Jun 9, 2008 1:34 AM PDT) loosing the German economy because of the Treaty of Versailles affeccted global markets
  • 505. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 1:34 AM PDT) oh

  • 507. Chloe L. (Jun 9, 2008 1:35 AM PDT) what about the effects of WWII: all i can think about is the Cold War, United Nations, and possibly decolonization
  • 508. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 1:35 AM PDT) possibly????
  • 509. Evan Z. (Jun 9, 2008 1:35 AM PDT) decolonization is definite
  • 510. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 1:36 AM PDT) that's a freaking HUGE post-wwii outcome... nationalization.. BIG TIME
  • 511. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 1:36 AM PDT) on germany affecting global markets, what are you talking about specifically
  • 512. Evan Z. (Jun 9, 2008 1:39 AM PDT) well pre-WWI, they actually had a currency that was worth something, rapid inflation and economic instability from the loosing their colonies and reparations caused foreign investments to deteriorate...something along those lines
  • 513. Evan Z. (Jun 9, 2008 1:40 AM PDT) sorry i can't type...if that doesn't make any sense im sorry :p
  • 514. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 1:41 AM PDT) that's what i figured, i just thought aside from the obvious economical impact it might have had to do with like punitive reparation fees and using those fees to invest in certain regions etcetcetc
  • 515. Kimberly G. (Jun 9, 2008 1:42 AM PDT) do we like question 3?
  • 516. Kimberly G. (Jun 9, 2008 1:42 AM PDT) do we like question 3? '

  • 571. Evan Z. (Jun 9, 2008 2:07 AM PDT) whats up?
  • 572. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 2:08 AM PDT) india's final result... coming out from 3rd world under nehru.. what kind of political/econ stucture did they have/successful? sorry haha
  • 573. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 2:11 AM PDT) oh ok it split in two with hindu/muslim tensions... both independence from britain, mixed public and private institutions to bring india into modernity by nehru
  • 574. Evan Z. (Jun 9, 2008 2:13 AM PDT) politically they are the largest democracy the world (have a congress, executive branch, and legislative), economically they became huge in agricultural exports
  • 575. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 2:14 AM PDT) so they sort of followed the first world model, although i still wouldn't necessarily call them that (in terms of industrialization nationwide)
  • 576. Brian D. (Jun 9, 2008 2:14 AM PDT) chloe you still there

  • 3. Julia DG. (Jun 9, 2008 4:23 AM PDT) do you guys think that for the comp essay (which i find to be insanely hard btw) the french revolution, the meiji restoration and indian independence would work?
  • 4. Julia DG. (Jun 9, 2008 4:24 AM PDT) or maybe instead of the meiji restoration, american industrialization?
  • 5. Stephanie H. (Jun 9, 2008 4:25 AM PDT) yeah it does work he said it earlier in the chat
  • 6. Stephanie H. (Jun 9, 2008 4:27 AM PDT) Do you know what you will put if you choose those three
  • 7. Julia DG. (Jun 9, 2008 4:33 AM PDT) ahhh oh yeah im reading that now haha...im working on what im going to put...my brain is pretty fried. but probably something about enlightenment ideals, expansionism and maybe civil disobedience for india?
  • 8. Jennifer K. (Jun 9, 2008 4:35 AM PDT) If I use the French Revolution for my comp essay do you think i should use political and social inequalities and enlightenment?
  • 9. Julia DG. (Jun 9, 2008 4:35 AM PDT) but i kind of feel like those may be weak arguments
  • 10. Julia DG. (Jun 9, 2008 4:39 AM PDT) any other ideas?

  • 15. Julia DG. (Jun 9, 2008 6:56 AM PDT) how india was in debt to england? or the english oppression and exploitation of indian people and resources?
  • 16. Matthew M. (Jun 9, 2008 8:11 AM PDT) Professor, in the essay question that discusses the "three worlds" are you meaning the three political worlds (capitalism vs. communism vs. everyone else) or do are you referencing the three economic worlds (developed vs. developing vs. undeveloped)?
  • 17. Steven Ch. (Jun 9, 2008 8:14 AM PDT) my brain is so fried.
  • 18. Stephanie H. (Jun 9, 2008 8:22 AM PDT) Do you think he is going to put question number three on the final because he kept mentioning it? or at least defending it...
  • 19. Stephanie H. (Jun 9, 2008 8:30 AM PDT) Do you think that question number 3 will be on the exam?
  • 20. Erica W. (Jun 9, 2008 8:34 AM PDT) is marcuse coming on again before the final?

  • 23. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 8:45 AM PDT) Matthew, it can be either the political OR the economic ones. You need to define which, and can discuss why you are choosing one or the other (if you want).
  • 24. Stephanie H. (Jun 9, 2008 8:46 AM PDT) why?
  • 25. Kalise A. (Jun 9, 2008 8:47 AM PDT) anyone starting an aim chat?

  • 27. Stephanie H. (Jun 9, 2008 8:48 AM PDT) Prof. Marcuse-Since the exam is today, do you want to be so kind and tell us which question is going to be on the exam?
  • 28. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 8:48 AM PDT) the Sakai chat is unstable this morning--it's not able to handle many more than 100 users--and you can see it's slow, so I'll try to post important points on the course website--one already there (in Sakai, the "Prof's Hist 2c homepage" link at left takes you there without opening a new window
  • 29. Stephanie H. (Jun 9, 2008 8:48 AM PDT) ;)
  • 30. Steven Ch. (Jun 9, 2008 8:48 AM PDT) it is only a couple hours before the test.. haha
  • 31. Harold Marcuse (Jun 9, 2008 8:54 AM PDT) It wouldn't be fair to everyone to tell you which question will be on the test, but for last minute crammers, I'll say this: the TAs have convinced me that it would be a good idea to give you a choice on II. So I'll offer two of them, and you can rule out memorizing stuff for one of them. HOWEVER: the IDs will be slanted toward the question in II that is not on the exam...
  • 32. Steven Ch. (Jun 9, 2008 8:56 AM PDT) Thank you Professor. Your time is much appreciated, even though Sakai is having overpopulation problems.
