Introduction (back to top)

  • The Munich monthly cultural magazine Süddeutsche Monatshefte [Historisches Lexikon Bayerns] was edited by Paul Nikolaus Cossmann (1869-1942). To influence the May 4, 1924 Reichstag elections, Cossmann devoted the April 1924 issue to "Der Dolchstoss," and the May 1924 issue to 'The Effects of the Dolchstoss.'
  • Starting around April 20, the SPD newspaper Munich Post published about a dozen articles refuting the arguments in Cossmann's journal. According to the German Wikipedia article "Münchner Dolchstoßprozess,"Cossmann published a series of Dolchstoßheften prior to the Reichstag elections of December 1924, and in October 1925 he sued the editor of the Munich Post, Martin Gruber, who had written that Cossmann falsified history.
  • In the monthlong trial over 100 witnesses and experts testified. The court found that Cossmann had "only" made a mistake (Irrtum), so that Gruber was not justified in calling him a rabble-rouser and traitor.
