"carpet picture" of Adenauer and Allied High Commissioners
Adenauer: "I am proud, never in my life to have been a soldier"
On Sept. 21, 1949 Adenauer introduced his cabinet to the Allied High Commissioners. To show distance, only they were supposed to stand on the "red" carpet, but Adenauer symbolically stepped onto a corner of it to symbolize West Germany's will to enter the Western alliance.
This quotation was used by opponents of Adenauer's policy of rearmament/remilitarization
